ok i found a link on the happa website which gave you a sample letter to send to local MP'S along with a link so you could find all the contact details of the ones local to your area here is the short email sent to all MP'S in the Northwest ________________________________________________
I wish to state my concern that "Minimum Values" Legislation previously enjoyed by our equines is under threat.
I find it abhorrent that there is a possibility that our equines could be subjected to the immense suffering already endured by the animals transported from Eastern Europe to Italy.
I have taken in my care a horse from one of the holding 'fattening farms' in france where she was days from going to meat, she suffers mental scars from her inhumane treatment in the hands of the people making money from this trade.
I ask you to please support my views in this matter and to add your voice in support of the retention of "Minimum Values" for our Equines and to ban live export.

Here is the reply i had from one of them....
Don't know how you identify 'mental scars' in a horse. Perhaps it's particularly articulate

this was written and there was no name given at the bottom it was from the UKIP Northwest absolutley disgusting , i also took the time to forward that to Emma Seal of the ILPH they are outraged and getting on to this asap will keep you updated.

I find this disgusting.
By his own statement he/she is implying that one cannot determine mental anguish in a disabled human being or one incapable of speech such as one suffering from autism if they cannot tell you in speech of that suffering.
Truly ridiculous.

You MUST pursue this! Don't rest until you get to the bottom of this - someone will get into a LOT of trouble for sending such a flippant, rude reply, and rightly so.

a reply i had today from a nicer MEP
please read below and i urge any body who has not yet done so please email your local mp re this it only takes a few mins
_________________________________________________________________________
Thank you for your e-mail.
A year ago I raised the issue of minimum values legislation in this country and its compatibility with EU law and was reassured by the European Commission that the legislation is supportive, and not as some had feared, likely to harm the minimum values policy.
Article 1.3 of the Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 of 22 December 2004 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations includes the following paragraph:
‘This regulation shall not be an obstacle to any stricter national measures aimed at improving the welfare of animals during transport taking place entirely within the territory of a Member State or during sea transport departing from the territory of a Member State.’
This article provides the nations of the EU with a legal basis to introduce stricter rules to improve the welfare of animals, and I continue to support the retention of the minimum values policy.
With best regards,
Chris Davies

Don't let my very Tory mother in law hear me say this but "yay!" for the nice Lib Dem MP (oh dear, that's me disinherited!). Have you heard anything back from that rude UKIP person, debutante? If not, I'd be inclined to contact the local press. Make sure they know you are a voter and that your electec representative was rude and dismissive.

As you say, the comment was not signed. It could have been written by the office tea boy. And it displayed at the least bad manners and a lack of consideration. I too think that it is hard to identify mental scarring unless an individual animal is assessed for behaviour patterns before and after an event, but try to stay calm and deal with the legal argument. I don't think that this comment is a slight on humans with difficulties expressing themselves at all. Just some "numpty" (good yorkshire word that) trying to be funny, and not suceeding

Say it is some teaboy trying to be funny at the expense of some toffee nosed horsey person (all horsey people are toffee nosed, aren't they?), that's equally shocking. A serious person has written a serious email with a serious concern. It should a) get past the teaboy and b) be taken seriously. Failing on either count is still failing.
Politicians have to deal with all sorts of requests from all sorts of people. My mother in law was once phoned at 7am on a Sunday by a woman who abruptly asked "Are you drains?" (I think she was head of environment at the time). Although the question was badly expressed, rudely timed and addressed to completely the wrong person, the answer still had to be polite and helpful. It's what our elected representatives are there for, isn't it?

Liz it is what they are there for, but equally, it would be wrong to attribute this comment to an MEP.
