What did we do? ...went too fast for the horse to cope?
got a dummy attached to horse and let her buck realising the enemy wasn't as such?
or, had lunge line attached to horse, got rider to get on then immediately put horse to work on large circle - let her run on?

actually I have one I am trying to help at the moment.
Mare will take the bridle now in the stable after having horrid few months of not accepting it AT all, spinning in box to offer bum/kicking. Dentist called, before sedation by vet was bridled by the dentist (very competant chap) although was a battle to do so. Work done on teeth, sharp edges but nothing too horrific to cause such over reactions (his prof opinion - temper/bad attitude/mareish).
Now horse is able to be bridled peacefully inside the stable - but NOT outside the stable at the hitching rails/tie up rail or anywhere outside. If bridled in exactly same way when outside (but not tied for safety or will pull back violently) will go into reverse or drift away and throw head up and do the same violent reaction turning head away as far round the the side as she can and hold it there out of the way (bit like lat flexion position!). If you were to HOLD her head and force her to stay with you she will lash out behind.
Temper? Pain? Hormones?

Janetgeorge What did you do .... erm ..... I think the dummy thing sounds a good idea .... I think you first walked round with the saddle on, then with something tied to the saddle then something heavier until you got enough weight to simulate a rider. Then on got the rider and hey presto .... ??

Maggot
Temper ... nope Pain ..... maybe in the past Hormones ... nope
Try lowering the head by squeezing the top of the neck and releasing/clicking/gooooood boy/or well done (which ever method you are used to!!) when the head goes down.
use anything but a bridle ... put a rope/stick/whip/piece of string/or anything that will go in like a bit near its mouth and teach the horse to take it into its mouth, most importantly let him get used to it coming out again without hitting the teeth.
First in the stable then outside. Go home
The next day do all of the above then use the bit (unattached to the bridle) and play around with it. In out ... in out .... etc etc click reward/goood boy/ whatever.
First in the stable then outside. Go home
The next day do all of the above then put the bridle on and off without the bit .... on off on off etc etc. click/gooooood boy/whatever.
First in the stable then outside .... go home
Then the next day do all of the above then put on the bridle with something soft instead of the bit on off on off etc click/goooood boy/whatever.
First in the stable than outside ... go home
Then all of the above and the full monty.
Good luck.
PS dont move on to the next stage until you are happy with the one you are working on... you know all this anyway!!

Can I do one? A fell pony that has been allowed to eat as much as it wants all its life has got too fat. She came to me on permanent loan age 7 2 years ago .... found walking hard work and is not forward going at all. She doesnt like being in the stable much. She has been on restricted grazing for 2 summers and no hard feed at all with hay mixed with straw in the winter. She is pretty much maintaining her weight at the mo but has gone from 618kg to 534kg in the time ive had her. She needs to be 500kg maximum. She is bad tempered .... her ears appear to be have sewn on the wrong way round and getting her to do any work is impossible. Questions 1. How would you cheer her up? 2. How can I get her fit if she hates moving?

get on and ride her! Take her out to the beach for a holiday ..loooooong way for you to go but change of scene and all that Mmmmm not a bad idea but ive no trailer
round pen her consistently, She is so tense if I move her around in an arena .....if she had the courage she would attack me.
...tie her to the bolting pone! he he
..lead and ride? (you lead, OH rides?) Like that idea
...clicker train her with polos? Done loads of clicker training but her anger will not go away.
get a carrot stick and drive her forwards? (you must have some lying spare?) How dare you!!!!!!!!
I am worried she has a problem with her joints .... she isnt lame but she gets so cross when asked to do anything. I have been through alsorts of different things with her including parelli and clicker training but she is soooo cross. All she wants to do is eat.

Back to your ponio, why don't you let her just eat then? Then she can be sick and sick until she's blue in the face as well as her hooves.
