Following on from the breeding thread and the costs I am considering putting my mare to a stallion at centyfield stud. (Devon) I am in yorkshire so would it work out cheaper (in theory ) to have AI than send her there. Also please would you be able to look at the stallion Milky Way and evaluate him for me? Thanks very much.

Wizard, if you have a good AI vet near, that has a residentail service, it would definitely be cheaper. They will do an "all in" price for the coverings and scanning and the livery is usually pretty good value. Because the mares are on site, they can be scanned one or more times a day and covered at exactly the right time, so the success rates are high with healthy mares.
Have you a link to the their site? And some pics of your mare?

I assume you mean this stallion: www.centyfield.com/stalliondetailmilkyway.htmlEcho Sue, residential AI with vet would be easier - would be what I'd do in future if I breed from my big mares again if I don't have my own stallion. Will go away now & look at his conformation.

Do you other breeders think I might get a spotty horse if I bred that lovely stallion Hamlet Frydenlund to my bay Luso mare? I don't breed for colour, so I'm clueless.

I agree completely also you'll be able to check your mare and with the best will in the world this is sooooo important, it can be the nicest place in the world but the change, grass can casue all sorts of stress when you least need it in your mare. Its not that expensive to get semen couriered either, I collected mine because I could!

Looking at Hamlets offspring, he isn't homozygous, so I would guess you'd have a 50% chance of spots - this is a guess tho - I'm not that up on spots - would have to look the inheiritance of them up.

Varkie, are spots dominant then? Bay, in lusos at least, is recessive, so you can get all sorts out of them. We are mad aren't we? Just need to see a nice stallion and we're off plotting and planning another breeding program.....

A quick bit of reading shows that spots are indeed dominant, and therefore a spotty to a non spotty gives a fifty percent chance of spots in the foalie. Not sure what you mean by getting all sorts out of the bay? A bay horse can pass on bay, black or chestnut. A bay is either AA (homozygous bay), Aa (heterozygous bay), or aa (not bay). But you're right about seeing the stallion & planning - the other day I saw an Iberian that knocked my socks off, and although I'm missing riding my mare terribly, I instantly started wondering what she'd produce put to him - then I started wondering where I could find a nice little luso/PRE filly to match to him!

Well, I don't do colour, but I think there's a lot of dilution factors in the Lusos, masked by the grey, so we get a lot of the pretty colours popping out, probably from the dilute chestnuts.

Not the bigest fan of cremellos but he is a very nice stallion and would look better in bay imo!! What colour is your mare wizard?

Oh dear! I did get slightly side tracked. Ok, thoughts. On the whole, quite a pleasing looking chap. Nothing awful or glaring jumps out. Possibly his angle of shoulder, neck length/depth & gaskin could be more perfect. But I am nit picking. I'd like him to be stronger behind, but I guess as he's not working, that's understandable.
Nice enough - doesn't blow me away. Would depend on the mare you were considering for him - would he improve her & vice versa?
