My friend bought a pony for £50 because the RSPCA had failed to follow up on her reports of it's suffering, for over 4 months. She called them again to tell them she had bought it and wanted to sign it over to them, only to be told that it was now her responsibility, and if she didn't sort it out that they would prosecute her! The poor thing was emaciated and had the worst eye infection I have ever seen. It's eyeball was rotting within it's skull. She called me in desperation and I got on the phone to the ILPH. They came and collected the pony within 2 hours! The poor creature was a wreak, but the ILPH saved him and gave her reports on his progress. They are fantastic in every way! The RSPCA are also useless when it comes to farm animals. Apparently, any domestic animal intended for human consumption does not fall in to their category of being an animal likely to suffer abuse.

I too don't think a field with lots of poo in will interest any welfare organisation I'm afraid! If the horses are well fed and comfortable then poo on the ground isn't cruelty! That is applying one's own standards and values to someone else - it is isn't objectivity in viewing the situation. Better to leave the telephone lines free for real cruelty reporting. Lottiedude - where did you read that: "Apparently, any domestic animal intended for human consumption does not fall in to their category of being an animal likely to suffer abuse.".Not my experience of the RSPCA. We have to be careful not to chuck unqualified statements like this into any "grown-up conversation"(!!) ?

All the mechanics are there for protection of ALL species , it's the implimentation that appears to be the greatest problem. Getting the law to crank up in defence of the voiceless is the hardest job of all. There are still many loopholes that need closing.
