Agree with Big e. If it was my daughter i would rather she rode the pony in a bit to suit that horse and was taught how to use it so that she was safe and the horse was comfortable.
You look like your having great fun and your pony looks in lovely condition. Keep your horses health and happiness at the forefront of your mind and you wont go far wrong. x

Have to agree with Cobloopy here, she's your pony Rom and you must do what you think right for her, you KNOW her others on here do not! If it was my daughter out on a hunting field I would want her to have good breaks too! At the end of the day it's no one elses business but your's Rom and Megan always looks fit and happy and raring to go. Another thread being spoilt here I feel, this was supposed to be about a 13 year old child having fun on her wee pony today which is what it's all about, I certainly don't see any abuse going on here, some horses are treated in a far far far worse manner than a child riding her pony in a gag, heaven forbid eh?! Let's call the RSPCA over it all, give me a break it's not abuse at all. Hope you had tons of fun Rom as you look like you did happy new year to you and Meagan and keep having fun this year, she's a credit to you, you've given an oldie a new lease of life xxxxx gag and all!!!!! xxxx

hey yeah, OP, and never mind the ponies older age, incorrect muscling caused by incorrect riding/unsympathetic hands,
when she was 'fizzy' you can guarantee it's cos she loves it so much (not that she just possibly wanted to get home as fast as possible and get through her day)
and when you made her jump fences you can hopefully guarantee that she's so obedient that she'll jump anything even if it's against her judgement to keep her self safe (isn't that why there are more injuries with horses who hunt?)
but, you go on and enjoy yourself, hunting fast and furious - keep safe.
whatever...

Maggot....do you talk to all 13yo's like that.....atleast Rom was mature enough to deal with the comments which were negative polietly....theres really no need for such nasty, sarcastic replies

Hmmmm just what I was think UK SJ, unfortunately some people will always think they;re right no matter what despite not knowing the full story, some other people just love to pass judgement.

er yes I do, there's no good babying riders m'affraid!
for the record, my daughter has hunted her own pony safely and sympathetically - I don't think I would be proud of her if she posted pix on a public forum of herself and didn't take on board any comments. We can't all agree and I don't! Simple facts of life!
And...there are plenty of 13 yr olds and under on our yard!

there is nothing wrong with offering advice to someone - especially if that person is young. how else can they learn?

I don't disagree Smudge but it's the way Maggot has worded their post.....most people have offer polite advice but being nasty and sarcastic isn't offering advice it's just plain rude and even as an 'adult' I'd be offened.....theres no need for it....especially when talking to a younger person.
I managed to school a pony similarly to Meg from needed a gag to hack/jump etc and by the end I could hack and showjump in a snaffle but I wouldn't have taken her xc or hunted without the gag....although I did only need the extra brakes every once in a while. I've also managed to pursuade a 12yo girl to take lots of gadgets off her jumping pony....but I approached it politely....not by being rude.

Its about being constructive in your criticism so the person can hopefully take on board what the so called grown ups with Experience are saying. I'm quite appalled sometimes with some posts i find it a very unintelligent way to offer needed advice. What will a 13yo child actually take on board from some of these posts??? I actually applaud Romeley for her very grown up answers to some posts. I don't encourage anyone to use a Gag, & i really think with some correct work you would find that you also don't need to use a Gag on your pony. But if this isn't a route you choose to go down i would Rather that you are safe. But IMO you would be far better getting a good instructor to help with your pony so that you can eventually throw away the Gag. Oh & i have been out hunting before anyone comments!!

I'm not trying to defend maggot - but its clear they feel strongly about it - perhaps there is a reason? I feel very downhearted at the moment - I went to a yard yesterday and saw a lame tb being ridden - with the most appalling conformation I have seen for a long while and an air of just having given up - he was grumpy, hunched up, sad, sore and fed up. I can understand why folk get so passionate - sometimes better than how I am feeling at the moment.

You've every right to express an opinion....but there are ways about it....and the manner with which you approached it is exactally the type which insted of encouraging people to change their ways just gets their back up and encourages no kind of change of thought....
at the end of the day....Emily who owns Meg is happy with how Rom looks after her and Rom loves and cares for Meg....and it's no one elses business but theirs really is it...if you read the other thread on which this topic was discussed you'll see what I mean....people expressed their opinions and advice polietly and as a result a adult discussion which changed peoples ideas progressed....being rude doesn't encourage people to rethink anything
