..do you have to wear a blue jacket or can you wear tweed?. It's more correct to wear tweed if you're under 18 (and for some hunts under 21 or not a subscriber). Most are fairly relaxed, and happy if you're smart, whether that be in blue, black or tweed.

Um, SF is only being honest. Sometimes, some things need to be said to be heard One of my mares arrived in a Dutch Gag - bottom hole. She had learned to evade it so we had no brakes at all... she tucked her chin in and I had sponge brakes and a few sticky situations. She goes much much MUCH better in a kimblewick (ex hunter nutter who loathes schooling). I have to say the kimblewick is great. She is also older - 16 now

Well reading that at first made me quite upset. I love my pony sooo much i would never do anything to hurt her. I tried her in a few different bits and she didn't like them. This one she is fine in. I certainly do not 'haul' my pony around at all, and using my whip i tap on the bum or shoulder..
Everyone is entitle to there own opinion, but that was quite harsh i think. My pony is happy and is treated well. She is very good for her age and loves her hunting.

Lovely pics Rom, Megan is looking lovely. As for the bit, I can't say a great deal about it to be honest, I hunt Inky in a gag, but maybe you could try what I do? I start at either the large ring, or one ring down, and if hes strong just pop it down a hole. Therefore I only have what part of the bit I need?

Lovely pics, i hope you had lots of fun.
Can i just add that i think, the owner has made sure her horse is stoppable for its young rider. If the pony took off with the girl, one or both could end up seriously injured or dead. I wouldn't want my 13 year old daughter to be riding someones elses unstoppable pony ina happy mouth snaffle.
In a perfect world i'm sure we would all love our horses to wear snaffles but in reality safety has to come first. Rider and pony!

Well, after some unecessarily hard comments on a happy thread, I'd just like to say that it's lovely to see ponies and their owners having such a good time. ;D
Lovely, happy pics.

I dont know that much about bits, but thanks to this thread (and the other one) I have learned loads more.....I dont often ride but this week I have ridden 2 diff ponies, both kept quite differently ie one is barefoot treeles the other shod, treed (and there are other differences...) One horse ridden in a "gentle bit" the other in a gag. I found that the pony in the snaffle hubg on me and pulled constantly and my shoulders ached and I was upsett buy the strong contact I had to make with him (although he was much better towards the end as I schooled him) The pony in the gag however was ridden on the buckle of the rein and had no pulling whatsoever, hrdly needed to contact her mouth atall. not trying to make any point really, just thought it was quite interesting as I had been reading this thread this wk and then get to see it in the flesh so to speak.x.x.x
( i know that my ridding method is far from good, but it is a work in progress)

Im soooooo jealous! Not been out this season for first time sice about 18 years. Sarahfox would be more qualified to comment when she has done a few seasons hunting on a horse that is fit, excited and experienced at the job. I would ignore what she says until she has the experience of hunting accross all country with fifty horses galloping away in front of her as she speaks from the lack of such experience which is not really worth much in real life.
