Well today was boxing day hunt, the meet was in the village where i live and keep Megan which is great It was great weather, and i was all on time and went very well. When we left the meet and hit the feilds, it was fantastic. I didn't have that much control but it was all fun. Megan was REALLY good, she is getting so used to it now, its just normal to her. First jump, i did know it, used to hack past it all the time when i kept Megan with Emily, but never in the 2years i have had the guts to jump it, but today i did Was soo happy, also they had pro photographer taking photos of us jumping it. Second jump was HUGE i mean MASSIVE! so i didn't do that one, went round with quite a few others, but found a jump on the way round, was about 3ft and very solid...nobody would go first, so i said yeah i would. Megan stopped first time but second time i growled and used my whip and she flew Was a brill day out and i do LOVE my pony sooo much, proper lil pro hunter pony Only got 2 pics atm, but trying to get hold of some more and jumpy ones Emily, Wendy and me at the meet i43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/RomelyPeg/100_1878.jpgMe and my Megan ponyy i43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/RomelyPeg/100_1874.jpgOh and a few from last week LOVE this one i43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/RomelyPeg/DSC036351-1.jpgi43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/RomelyPeg/DSC03633-1.jpgi43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/RomelyPeg/DSC03637-1.jpgi43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/RomelyPeg/rommeg.jpgSorry for the essay.x

I cant say anything nice about a pony with an upside down neck from being ridden on the bottom ring of a 3 ring gag whilst 'enjoying itself'.So I wont say anything atall.

hmmmm, I think you slightly missed the point of the whole 'if you cant say something nice then dont say anything at all' saying.
Two reins would be lovely romely - would help with control when you need it, but none of my bloody business really.
Glad you had a good time, keep on having fun.

OK, In spain they use a rather nasty noseband called a seratta, many serratas have no leather covering and serrated metal teeth that dig into and scar the horses nose.Every english person that I have ever heard comment on having seen this thinks it is terrible. Do all the people that think hauling on a gag is fine and dandy have the slightest idea of the bruising that it causes in the horses mouth? I dare say if it was as visible as the scarring caused by a serrata it would very rarely be used. Certain bits have a place in certain situations with certain people to reschool a ruined horse, perhaps, but to charge round a hunt field hauling on the 3rd ring of a gag whilst hitting it to make it jump big solid ( ie; mess up,get seriously injured) fences,is simply not horsemanship imo.I am dissapointed that IH people consider it reasonable. Sorry all,but I decided that why should I shut up when in my eyes it is a serious abuse of the horse. Btw,I have no problem with hunting per se,what I do object to is this kind of attitude and imo complete lack of understanding of the horses feelings. And anybody who doesnt want comments they dont like added to their thread shouldnt post on a public forum, such is life.

Megan is quite an old pony (late twenties am i right Rom?) so shes not going to a have a perfectly muscled neck. Older ponies are very hard to get muscled up properly. Plus ponies can be hard to school to get the correct muscles. (mainly because they are little "idiots" and will get out of doing any type of hard work at all.) How do you know that Rom 'hauls' on her ponies mouth? i can assure you she doesn't and she very soft hands. Having ridden with Rom and Megan i can confirm that Megan is perfectly happy in her bit! So back off!

Megan is my pony, on loan to Rom.
Shes very whizzy and tbh only stops when Rom is nervous she does enjoy her jumping. By using her whip Rom means a tap on the shoulder or on her bum, she wouldnt whack Megan, she knows better than that.
Rom normally hacks her in a snaffle, but she does need this bit for hunting, she loves to go!
She is 21 and still so fast and whizzy. Her neck hasnt got the greatest muscle, she can go in an outline for a bit, but Rom mostly hacks.
Roms only 13 its a bit harsh to be so harsh to her. She loves Megan to bits, and for Megan to still be fit, healthy, and raring to go (you should see this pony race Meg) I think is a credit to Rom.

I have to admit to absolutly hating with a passion 3 ring dutch gags, I think they are horrible bits.
However, this isn't what the thread it about, and I am glad you had a good day Rom

I meant to add, when I first had Megan I schooled her / hacked / xc in a hanging snaffle, no probs. I took her hunting in the same bit as I could hack with company / xc no probs. I genuinely had no brakes. I am good (sounds boastful, isnt meant to be) at stopping with my seat, Meg can stop off no rein at all, but I literally just could not stop this pony. We tried a cheltenham gag, Megan really didnt like that. She isnt too keen in a pelham either, but she seems happy in a bubble bit. Rom needs brakes, it is better to be safe. megan is schooled, can stop off seat / snaffle etc, but just loves her hunting too much! However it is a public forum so people can post their opinions. I am just posting my opinion in reply

Sorry Emily, but I just dont agree with the whole principle of gags and horses 'enjoying themselves' whilst being hurt and damaged in the mouth to stop, and if the pony is 20 then might it not be time to keep her doing the smaller fixed fences? Also," growling and smacking her with the whip" will not give the pony confidence to jump,it simply makes the pony more scared of you ( the whip) than the alternative ( jumping). I have been and looked at romelys other pics, and she looks great jumping, nice soft hands etc,I would still prefer to see the pony in a lozenge or comfort snaffle than a gag, even on the main ring, but thats no big deal, just my personal preference. This isnt anything personal to romely, I didnt realise she was quite so young, and Im sure she is a lovely girl, but I just dont like the whole idea,as I explained in my earlier post,to my mind if you need that much harshness to stop then perhaps you should be doing something else with the pony.

Its like....my old skoda, you had to "stamp" on the breaks to get it to stop, my new skoda however, you just have to tap them and we halt. Im sure if rom had this pony as a yearling she would school it in sympathetic manner without the need for gags and such. Im glad you had a nice day, its nice to she an older pony still living life to the full.....and with out any little animals getting ripped up in the process!! XX

Well done Rom, glad you had a good day and the weather held out for you all.
As i have always been told a bit is only as harsh as the hands using it. I know that Rom does not yank and pull on the bit, she has been very well taught by Emily. Surely it is better to use a stonger bit with softer hands than it is to use a softer bit and with heavier hands.
