Sorry to hear this -very stressful. When I had one of mine pts I moved the other to a local yard as he had not been on his own before. He came home again when I had another. Its hard enough dealing with the loss of one and can be made worse by having to deal with the distress of the other. Hope it all goes well xx

So sorry to hear this Gwen. When I had my old boy pts, I took my other 2 out to see him once he was down, they had a quick look and I put them back in the stables out of sight. I really think it helped them understand what had happened as they didn't seem anxious or call at all afterwards.

So sorry about Jack Gwen, was that because of his severe arthritic condition? He will leave a big Jack sized hole, poor old lad. No more stiffness now. Sabria's time is fast approaching but she seems to still enjoy life to a degree, it's really hard when it is an insidious sort of degeneration.

Thanks, guys.
No, Jill it wasnt because of the arthritis, but his teeth and sinus probs. We knew it was just a matter of time before it would reappear and Clare with my backing had said that she could not put him through anymore extractions or sinus flushes. But, we did hope we could hold it off with the antibiotics etc, but was not to be.
I said to the vet although he was only 14 yrs old his body had taken such a bashing that I doubt even a 28 yr old horse had.
Edna has wandered off and is grazing quite peacefully, but keeps going to look at him, but from a distance, bless her. I do believe she understands as no whinnying (sp) or nothing. I hope so anyway.
We have had to pull ourselves together for Edna's sake and get the Falabella on short term loan and have been in touch with Bransby Home of Rest for Horses, spoke to them and filled in an application form.
They have just rung and said we can go and see a 13.1hh 14 yrs old mare this Sat. Boy have they worked quickly.

Oh Gwen, Bransby are BRILLIANT. I had Holly here within two days of losing Rosa. They were so understanding, and utterly superb at matching a companion with mine and Bali's needs.
I'm so sorry you had to lose Jack, but you won't regret having a lovely Bransby horse to keep Edna company.

Hugs Gwen - I think it makes it easiest for them to allow them to be in the filed with their dead companion as long as possible.

I am so sorry to hear this Gwen, I hope you are doing ok. xx RIP Jack. I also believe that they understand when they see the body. When I had my girl PTS I let her companion donkey see her afterwards. He never called after that so I think he understood. Strange as he always got stressed if I took her away. So I do think it really helps them in the grieving process. Big hugs to you all. xx

So sorry to hear. I always remembered my instructor telling me to let horses sniff their friends after they had passed away. When I lost Herbie early this year, I was surprised with his friend's reaction. He was uptight but it was as if he knew. He watched and then walked over and sniffed. He then spent a time calling until Herbie was removed. A day later he was fine. I think it is a good idea.
So sorry for your lossxxx
