Hi
My mare has been rubbing her mane now for years. She doesn't have sweet itch she just continuously rubs the same patch and does it all year round. The lower half of her mane is almost completely rubbed bald and it doesn't even seem like it grows back anymore or if it does she rubs it off straight away! She wears a fly rug in the summer and a full neck rug in the winter and I have tried just about every product you can buy and nothing seems to work, it just costs me loads of money! It's just such a shame as she is stunning but her appearance is ruined by the state of her mane!
Does anyone know of anything else I can do or try that they know to work?? I'm starting to tear my hair out over it, please help!

Yes, try reducing the sugar and grass in her diet. Mine rubs both mane and tail given half a chance and it isn't entirely due to flying insects, grass has an effect on him as well. I keep him in a starvation paddock and feed him hay all summer (yes, it is a pain, just when you think you can relax on the feeding etc) as well as electric fence all solid objects so he can't start the itch/scratch/itch cycle. Works for us, means I can never leave him in a stable between June and October but he ties up well so that's what he does whenever I need him in to groom etc. And Nettex Itch Stop helps mine, might be worth trying.

That was exactly what I was going to write - to the word !! I do have to be vigilant, even when tied up mine can go to rub, so I have to pick my tying up spot and watch him like a hawk, but following Jill's advice above we are having our best year so far...

Honeys sweet itch is the best it's been for a long time but I think as well as there being less midges this year all the changes to her diet I've made for her feet (ie low sugar, adding linseed, etc) also make a massive difference to her itchiness. I don't want to jinx it but half way through summer and still a full mane! I also put a solution of baby oil, neem oil and a mix of essential oils into a baby oil bottle and pour that on mane and tail every day... As well as it stopping the midges I'm sure it also stops mutual grooming of the mane area which I'm sure was responsible for a bit of the baldness last year!

My pony prone to mildish sweetitch was helped greatly by feeding brewers yeast for two years. However, since feeding a higher spec balancer plus the low sugar diet she has barely rubbed her mane this year and she hasn't had BY since December. No sprays etc. used. Mind you she has constant access to a barn if she chooses.
Ps. She has been fed linseed for a few years now.
