Hi everyone.
I found my horse tom last night with an injured leg ? His right hind is sticking out to the side his left hind also seems very weak and he is lacking co ordination. The main thing is that he is spinning round constantly. Vet says either fractured hip with a compressed nerve, or a neurological cause. Has anyone ever seen anything similar? It is very distressing seeing him spin like that constantly. He is 32, arab previously fit and well vet reluctant to put down at this stage. Thankyou

I can't offer any help other than what your vet has said to you, but it does sound distressing for you and him. Has he had any pain relief? The spinning sounds as though that is acute pain he is trying to find some relief from.

Yes, he has had regular bute and an I.V steroid injection today. I think its pain, but the vet is not entirely sure. P.S - He did settle after his steroid injection, interestingly!

Could he have had a stroke or something simalar. Is your vet a specialist horse vet . What treatment is he giving. This sounds awful for you and your horse.
What colour is your horse . I looked after an old grey horse once which had an internal melanoma which caused it to loose the full use of one of his back legs.
Thinking of you.

When I saw him spinning in the field with no co-ordination I initially wondered about a stroke, or poisoning, as it seemed neurological to me, but his right hind was at such a strange angle I thought it must be injury - also he is on acres of hilly wet ground, I thought he might have slipped and done his stifle. But his left hind is also very wobbly and he can't find the food bowl - but is still hungry and alert (which is why the vet wanted to give him a chance). He is a bay arab :-)

oh and the treatment is pain relief and time. Although I can't see how spinning around constantly is going to help him :-(

I personally think if the spinning/problem has been going on now for 24 hours or more it would be good to get a second opinion. Sorry to be so blunt but it cant be good for him or you and I think there is a major problem that needs sorting and fast tbh.
Everything crossed here for a good outcome. XX

He did suggest creating a narrow stall to stop the spinning - but I dont have the facilities. I see that as stopping the symptom, not the cause. Thankyou for your advice I was given Tom aged 24 because I am a known fuss pot and I would give him the best old age possible. I have been planning the best death possible for him in my mind for years, and this is not it.

Sorry but I would PTS as at his age he doesnt deserve to be in pain at all. I am a firm believer in no pain in old age for animals and regardless of age I wouldnt inflict pain on any animal for longer than a few hours at most. So would pts rather than operate for colic too maybe I am a bit hard but I couldnt bear to see and old friend in pain I hope both of you can have some peace but Also hope if you dont end it for him his suffering is short and worth it giving him a long and happy life in the future

I understand what you are saying. This cannot go on. I am distraught to lose him. Tomorrow I think will be the day. Just feeling very blurry at the moment. Atleast I know he is warm and safe. I just hope he is not spinning. x
