Ladyndibs - I know what you mean with the feet - mine was a nightmare too! It took a lot of perseverance, but he's now so good that I actually use asking him to give me a foot as a calm-down technique. I only realised the other day how remarkable a transformation this is for him - from major battle to comfort-blanket familiarity! Daviesbaby20 - fantastic news, sounds like you're doing brilliantly, so much so that you might have to change the title of your thread!! And your horse looks a very handsome boy. Funnily enough he looks quite like mine, who is black with a big white blaze . Rowanrachel - will look out for your thread.

Hiya jan
Id never thought of a diversion tactic to calm a situation just the normal steady breathing and calming influence ! Tommy was also terrible to have his feet picked up when he first arrived !
Re thread title change erm quite new to the site so dont know how lol !!! X

Well you have to have a dream... ( as my new signature says) lol. Honey is a mouther as well, shes very delicate with her mouthing but we have to have a strict 'no sweeties' policy as it quickly becomes more than lips ;-) she also puts the headcollar in her mouth EVERy time you put it on- there's no avoiding it- tried everything and it's now quicker just to let her have a quick sook then she let's go an let's you put it on otherwise you get in a ere battle of her trying to sook it and you trying to keep it out her mouth! It's quite comical! X

I have only just read this entire thread tonight and it is great that you have made such a change over a short space of time for you and Tommy, so a HUGE well done!
As I was reading it I did wonder what his livery routine was, purely as my boy, who is normally gentle and (quite!) well mannered turned into a grumpy git (nipping, not wanting to be brushed etc) as a result of being stabled for long periods without getting any exercise or stimulus after sustaining an injury that meant he couldn't do anything. He even gave me a proper bite when we loaded him to take him to his new yard - he had never done that before or since. 24hrs into his new life of 24hr turnout and he was back to his sweet self.
I guess what I am trying to say is that maybe Tommy was/is bored and frustrated if he has limited turnout time to just 'be a horse' and chill out a bit. So now that you have a change of attitude and are doing things that make Tommy's brain work, instead of what you percieved as being nice for him like grooming which does nothing to mentally stimulate him he will continue to improve. I did the Psychology course recently and I think 'Displacement Behaviour' is what this could be - I am no expert so please don't take my word for it, it is just hopefully something else for you to think about so your relationship with Tommy continues to improve.
If I had a pound for every tear I have shed over my horse and every time I have questioned whether or not I should keep him/am I enough for him/is he happy/is he bored/etc., etc. I would be a very rich woman! Keep thinking and exploring every idea likeminded people offer you - just look at how that Herbal supplement has helped - but make sure you stay safe and get the RA back if you need to. Baby steps, that is what it takes, even if some of them go backwards it doesn't matter
