Thankyou so much to Cara for posting this warning despite her dreadful loss - ive been away a week so missed it originally but was concerned that the horses seemed constipated and were doing very green tarry poos, then caught whinney eating oak leaves. Spent yesterday fencing them off the oak trees and am so glad I did as I found acorns in droppings this morning. It never occurred to me they would eat them when they have loads of grass and edible bushes to eat first Rip Jewel, your passing hasnt been in vain xxx

Thank you all so much for your beautiful comments, i've read every single one If everyone can please tell all their horsey friends and family about Jewels story, help me spread the word It's already spreading like wildfire round where we live! I'm definately going to write in to the magazines, I know Horse do real life stories so I'm going to write to them! The only problem with a facebook page is that you get loads of sickos writing really horrible comments on there to wind everyone up There is a page dedictated to Millie, a horse who came back from being on loan in an appauling, emaciated condition, the people who loaned her had starved her, and some of the comments on that page are so upsetting, the last thing I want is for people to write horrid comments about my girl, I think I would end up in the loony bin We bought Jewels ashes home yesterday, so she is back home with me where she belongs, she's sat on my desk in my bedroom, (so I can say goodnight to her each night) with a little wicker pouch with her shoes in and a posy of fresh flowers on top

Good for you Cara, that's such a good idea to write to the horsey mags about your awful experience. I should imagine that your tragic loss has made every horse-owner on here check their fields - and like Bertie, fence off oak trees. I do hope that is some sort of consolation for you at this awful time. Thinking of you. xx

UP so more people see this.
I have put a post on my facebook page (only friends can see it) and had several messages of sympathy for Cara and thanks for the timely reminder, a couple of people commented that it's too easy to be complacent and my post has made them fence off their oaks.

Cara thank you for posting when this is so raw. I am so sorry that you both had to go through this. If you can write to horsey mags or get them to do a feature then other horses and owners will not have to go through the same. Maybe also a reminder at the end of the summer next year? Maybe we should persuade the BHS to raise awareness too, they do lots of work regarding ragwort.

I mentioned to a friend about Oak leaves and twigs also being a danger to horses... they didnt know, but do know now, they weren't aware of acorns being dangerous, so all good all round, the news is being spread.
