So sorry for you loss I cannot imagine how you must feel.
I know its probably to raw for you and will be for a while, but do consider writing a letter to the horsey mags with piccys of Jewel if they publish it then it may help make other people aware of the risk of acorns. They contain Tanic acid and to some horses can be addictive hence why they go for them and its toxic to many animals. Acorn leaves also contain tanic acid but less than the acorns.

i'm so so sorry - how heartbreaking for you! xxx
yes, i believe that acorns are like narcotics to horses - they get very addicted, and can do even after just trying them once, and then they can actively seek them out...
it's just not very widely known - my daughter told me she's seen children at the riding school feeding handfuls to the riding school ponies - i remember talking to the club owner and she didn't seem to think it was a problem and i didn't push it as i wasn't confident of my facts, but i will definitely say something again...
sending big hugs and thinking of you and your beautiful mare xxx

Ull-mi my Fjord makes a beeline for the acorns if let out into that part so I have been keeping her away.. It doesn't help that I've found the odd dropped acorn right in the middle of their field (I know squirrels drop them sometimes when scurrying across the field, or possibly that Ull-mi chases the squirrel for their acorns, it wouldn't suprise me actually !!??)

I can't believe I'm reading this. I'm so so so sorry to hear this. What a terrible thing to happen. I too loved seeing all your photos and videos and thought what a great pair you two made. Plus I love coloureds as you can see. Why do such cruel things happen? You are in my thoughts, and if I could do anything to bring her back for you I would xx

Hello everyone, it's Cara's Mum here. I don't come on here very often but just felt I had to back up Cara's warning about the devestating effects that acorns can have on horses.
What happended to Jewel last Thursday morning has got to be the most devestating thing we have ever experienced. It was truly horrendous to see a horse go through what she went through and if we can prevent another horse going through that then Jewel's passing will not be in vain.
Please, please spread the message that acorns and oak leaves can kill horses - Yes it is very rare and Yes it depends how much tolerance your horse has to the tannin in the acorns. Horses can also develop a taste for acorns which we think is what happened with Jewel as the vet found her stomach was full of them at the post-mortem. So even though the acorns are bitter tasting some horses will eat them even if the grazing is good (although ours isn't).
Please don't think I'm scaremongering but I can't believe how many people (including myself) are unaware of the possible consequences of horses eating acorns.
If anyone has any ideas of how I could raise awareness please let me know.
Goodby Jewel - RIP Sweetheart! Cara loved you and always will with all her heart - at times you could be stroppy and opinionated and I used to say to Cara that I didn't know how she coped with you but she did and loved you unconditionally- you were part of our family and we will miss and love you always.
Much Lovexxxxxxxxxxx

So sorry to hear of your sad loss Cara. At least Jewels death is not in vain. If your story has saved just one more horse, then your said loss will help save others.
I have to admit, its something i had never heard of, but we are just off to check fields now.
Big hugs Cara xx
