I didn't want to share this last chapter until I was quite sure it was going to happen. I was afraid I would say too much, too soon and end up ruining Atos's chances in some way. So please forgive me holding on to this a couple of days!
When Atos was on the way to rescue, the transport team (Shari and Lou!) were able to call me and give me the details of previous owners on Atos passport. The owner advertising him hadn't supplied this info yet, despite many calls from me to try and get it. I wanted to track down his medical history etc to give him the best chance going forward.
It took a bit of research and digging, but I managed to get a phone number that led me to the previous owner. I told her what had happened to Atos and asked for any information she could give me about his background, history and medical history. She was so happy to hear from me about Atos. It was very emotional. She had been searching for him high and low, regretting having sold him on a few years back due to having just too many horses. She had even seen the advert in question and thought it couldn't be him because, to her knowledge, he didn't have the medical conditions he was advertised with.
I told her he was literally on the road, half-way to rescue, but that she was welcome to apply to the rescue to become a foster home for him. She was almost crying with joy at the thought of the possibility of having him back.
So she applied! She had fantastic references and vet references and signed the legally binding loan agreement which prevents re-sale and leaves him the legal property of the rescue. So his future is forever safe and he is back with a home that loves him and understand him.
Whereas he had been quite a handful with some recent owners, he was apparently delighted to see his old "Mum" and was sweet and affectionate to her (he had been trying to bite and kick the owners he got rescued from!) - and loaded easily. He went home today!
It's unfortunate he had to have 2 long journeys in a week, but it has made the difference between being shot as a dangerous wreck and having made it home to where he will be loved and cared for, but with the life-long protection of being owned by a sanctuary.
So tonight Atos is back with his family. It's a very good home indeed, according to the vet - very knowledgeable, experienced and quick to call the vet whenever needed. I couldn't have dreamed of a better ending for this lad. I hope to go and visit him in his new/old home some time in the near future.
Meanwhile, hopefully I will get some more pics of him to share.
THANK YOU once again to all who helped Atos. You saved his life and gave him a future none of us could have predicted!
Thank you also to the Mods for permitting these threads and the fund-raising to save Atos.
