StringhaltWhat is it?Stringhalt is a condition where there is an involuntary, spasm or exaggerated over flexion of the hock during movement – the leg is often flexed quickly then slammed to the ground. It may not occur on every step and may affect one of both hocks. CausesThe cause of stringhalt is unknown. Some people believe it is a conformational fault, some think plant toxins can cause it, others think it could be due to an abnormal thalamus. Symptoms• Snatching and slamming of the leg TreatmentIn most cases if the horse is not in pain, the treatment is nothing. The horse is classed as unsound but may still be ridden lightly. In severe cases, the vet may suggest an operation to cut the lateral digital extensor muscle. There are possible medications that could help and new research is showing that a change in diet may also be beneficial.
