Christopher Bartle has asked IH organise a tour for him in November. Daisy and I went for a lesson with him last winter (trouble is it was 5 hours there and 5 hours back!) I think as our highest ever placed dressage rider at the Olympics (6th) and the oldest rider to win Badminton (means his kept his nerve a long time very good sign) he would be a brilliant person to do a demonstration. He's also the German event team coach (OK he should have taught them about the starting line but let's not go there). If you went to see a Chris Bartle demonstration - what would be the most useful information he could give do you think?
This is your chance to plan the whole demonstration!

Well, you could use me!! Would be so much to "put right" it could take a week though!! LOL! Joking apart, it would be nice to see a mix of top riders/horses and some more ordinary ones. I like to see some younger riders (13/16 yrs) included as there are often youngsters in the audience and I feel this gives them encouragement. As for information, perhaps a training plan explaining how to get from one level to another. ..and to explain just how long it takes to produce a horse or pony (whatever the discipline), and the importance of not pushing talented young horses.
Good Luck.

I think the most useful information is the stuff that can't be taught unless you've had the experience - tips on how to calm your horse down in a variety of competition circumstances, ways to minimise/mask problems during a dressage test or what to do when it all goes wrong, techniques for overcoming your own nerves or fears, how to assess whether your horse is ready for a step up or just as importantly, a step down... all these things.
I guess what I mean is that there are lots of people out there who can teach us reasonably well how to jump, hone the technique over obstacles, how to ride the dressage movements, etc - what I would pay to see is the inside tips and knowledge of how to overcome problems we may encounter on the way. Also interested in the teamwork side of things - how to work well as a team, etc.

Gosh, what a huge subject! I’d be happy to go to a demo on whatever Chris thought was important. Having said that my particular area of interest is training the horse for prelim / novice dressage and building confidence show jumping.
I was fortunate enough to be a student at the Yorkshire Riding Center for 3 months many years ago. I never had any lessons with Chris but while I was riding a school horse on my own he helped out. One of the things he said was “Your doing too much, the horse can feel a fly”. I’ve since read something very similar in one of Mark Rashid’s books and I have found this very helpful. It is so easy to get sucked into the “the horse isn’t doing it!” frame of mind and start doing more of the same and ultimately making the situation worse. So if he wanted to include that I think it is something that other people will find useful as well.
I’m also interested in triumph over adversity. It’s great to hear how other people worked through problems and came out the other side and it can really inspire people to work through similar problems. An old riding instructor of mine told me that the horse Chris came 6th at the Olympics on was a gift because it was so badly behaved and he couldn’t bring it off a 20m circle for years. I have no idea if this is true but if it is I would love to hear how he turned the horse into a dressage star.
Anyway, good luck with the demo and I’m definitely coming.

I'm pretty sure that anything he had to offer would be interesting, in all of the interviews i've read about him he comes across as having a common sense approach to horses and also seems to genuinely care about them.

Impulsion, people often have real problems getting the horses to move forward in the school and when they do they get speed not impulsion.
Asking a horse to come round, so many people are still trying to pull the heads in and not work from behind
sounds good - would love to see him..

Impulsion - the key to correct work is the energy the horse has from behind - NOT pulling from the front which so many people still do (and still teach!!)

Twenty years ago I would have said get him to tell people you can do anything with a thoroughbred, and do it well. Now I'd just like to ask him how the Germans view our 'Kleinpferde', as they used to call mine.
At a demo? Oh dear - I'm going to be a bore. I want more people to understand how important ground work and long reining are to develop a supple and correctly moving horse, before a rider gets on board. To see long reining lateral work, demonstrated by Chris Bartle, would help get this message over to people who think if they just keep riding their horse, all will fall into place.
When you see the effect on an experienced dressage horse of Richard Maxwell's groundwork and long reining, or Mary Wanless's altering the rider's position, it becomes all too obvious that riding and training like you always have done, will get you what you always have got.

You've got to do Brooksby E.C in Leicestershire!! I'd love to see him working with young horses at the just backed staged. Longreining and pole work would be fab as well!

I remember watching him compete at Goodwood dressage championships when I was a kid, I think he used to ride Wily Trout who seemed so delicate compared to the socking great Warmbloods, but boy, could he move.
I'd love to see him at The Hand EC (as Liz said, which is just outside Clevedon).
I would like him to demonstrate how to improve your riding to really get a horse to listen to you and also what exercises are excellent for balancing yourself and your horse.
