I tow with a Toyota Landcruiser. It is a fantastic workhorse. We have a 3 horse trailer and it pulls it easily.

We have a Nissan Navara and it tows like a dream.. it really is wonderful. Then again it has to put up with towing horses/boats/be filled with diving stuff and generally battered a fair bit, so for all of that it is perfect ;D

I've also got a Trooper ('03 plate, 3.0 TD, LWB) and it is just brilliant. Took it out today, up and down 10% hills with frost and it just LAUGHED at the conditions.

Shandypants, how do you find your Bighorn for reliability (especially the automatic bit)?

depends in what you are towing. I have a Jeep Wrangler 2.5 soft top and a light weight Chevel Liberty trailer-as well as two Icelandics. Could not tow a bit horse but am unlikely to swop from Icelandics so does not matter-great in the summer with the top off and tows well for a small 4X4 (dont get a 6 cyl 4 litre one as it tows less and drinks petrol like a fish)

As Colin says - depends hugely on what you are towing, your budget, and for me the balance between how much you tow and how much you drive without towing.
I have a Honda CRV (the new version which tows 2 tonnes) and a lightweight Bateson trailer. It tows really well, and even with two horses in I get about 30mpg. Without towing on a longish journed I average about 40 mpg - and as I do a lot of miles, that is a major consideration for me.
So, first, what is your budget? Second, how much towing v. ordinary driving will you do with it? And are you after something that is a brilliant tower, but may not be the quietest most comfortable vehicle otherwise, or does it need to be a comfortable all round car too?

I used to have an Isuzu Trooper LWB, and it was fantastic. Automatic too. It was a fab car, I'd have another in a heartbeat! It made nothing of towing - you barely knew you were. It was very reliable. It had a great turning circle. It was really comfortable too - all the best bits of having a 4x4, and the comfort of a car too. Excellent vehicle.
Now I have a LWB Landrover. Of course, it's great at towing. It's a work in progress tho - ask me again in a couple of years - we're busy adapting it to what I want as we go.

I have a Kia Sorento (2003, diesel) and I love it. Pulls IW 510 carrying 17hh ID and 15.3 TBx with ease.
