I would definitely say get him freezemarked as well Mardie. Microchips are all well and good but a freezemark is a visible deterrent. Should heaven forbid your boy get stolen, with a freezemark there will instantly be thousands of extra pairs of eyes searching for him. Whereas with a microchip only, whilst you would know your horse from 100 paces, others won't.

YES YES YES. A MILLION TIMES YES. For exactly the reasons that Casper has outlined.

Freezemarking is the best deterrent.
Approximately 80 horses are stolen each year Between 0 and 5 of those horses are freezemarked Of the freezemarked horses, 95-100% are found Of the horses not freezemarked very few are ever found
If you get your horse freezemarked, get it done on the shoulder. A saddle mark can be kept permanently covered up with either a rug or a saddle. If the horse is marked on the shoulder then the mark will show when it is ridden.
And get a proper number done rather than just the micromark. It is much easier for people to identify a horse from a unique mark rather than a micromark.

I notice you are a guest Mardie, but if you are still reading the replies - then yes get your horse freezemarked, take it from me I know the pain of having your horse stolen and the peace of mind I have knowing my new boy is freezemarked should the worst happen again.
It may not stop theft - but I believe it is a small deterrent and greatly increases your chances of finding them again.

Don't put it off too long Mags. It takes a while to get dates off both companies and it would be dreadful if they got stolen while you were thinking about it!
