I do. Touch wood, no problems so far. I do know a friend's horse, out 24/7, who would regularly colic after the first frost or two each year, though.

Why not? Also, just put out hay to keep them happy until the sun comes out. I understand that frosty grass is bad for laminitic types.

ok here goes...... arrived at yard this morning and my beautiful toni went to get another horse ready to turn out with asti. we were informed that the horses aren't turned out whilst there is frost on the ground we looked at each other baffled and i continued to get asti ready for turn out as toni replaced the outdoor rug for his stable rug on poor 'oli'. out went asti with plenty of haylage. i tried phoning the yo to ask if it was right that she didnt want oli turning out but the phone was switched off. the same person said that the yo had just phoned her to check that i hadnt turned either of her two out and thank god i hadn't i couldn't stop myself from saying that i had never yet come across a horse that had died because of frost i then left an explanation that i had put haylage out for asti but it should hopefully all be gone by the time the other 4 horses are turned out later (i was asked not to put hay out because 3 of the others dont have it whilst they are out!). i cant help being opinionated about the most ridiculous things in life and have never suffered with any of mine in over many many years of winter months and grazing! i just wanted to check that i haven't completely lost the plot ;D

I know people with laminitic horses that don't turn horses out if it's frosty but I didn't think it would be a problem other than that. Bella regularly is turned out on frosty mornings and has suffered no ill effects. Come to think of it no horse that I've ever had has shown any ill effect from frosty grass.

Yes I put out in the frost, no chose really when I turn out on the way to work. But I do make sure they have something in the bellies, so give breakfast and put hay out.

laminitic types don't suffer because of frosty ground, its because of the fructans in the grass which, incidentally, is at its worst around lunchtime. i've also 'heard' that frosty grazing can cause gas colic , but its my beleif that it could only occur in horses that aren't accustomed to it. Astri is most deffo used to it as she lived out for many a night on frosty conditions with no ill effect whatsoever. please feel free to add or suggest other reasons for no turn out on frost.

Mine are yarded now for the winter as it's far too wet here and I don't want a repeat of the foot problems we had the first year over here but tbh I don't think I would turn mine out here after more than 2 -3 sunny and frosty days in a row which I believe can cause extra high sugar levels in the grass.
Oh yes our yard is large with a gravel surface and access to a large barn...they can and do canter often especially when horses go by on the road! ;D

I turn out onto frosty field straight after breakfast so that the frozen grass dosent go straight in if you get what I mean?

I should have said that mine all have breakfast before going out, as well as having hay in the field if there is a frost.

Another one whose horse is out 24/7 so no choice, BUT we also put plenty of hay out when it is frosty.
