Am thinking of doing a first aid course for horses.
I've done one on people, basic same stuff, stem bleeding with pressure etc, but bandaging techniques will be different.
Anyone know how I would go about finding somewhere where it will be offered??
This comes from an inicident at my yard today, where an elderly horse fell and gahsed his knee open. His owners put a tournique on, to stop the bleeding.. it did so, but since vet wasnt coming out for perhaps another couple hours, would he still have a live leg after??
After they asked for my help, i took it off, and applied some gamgee and vet wrap. After seeking "professional" help from out own SS3, she pointed out that I had probably done the bandage wrong . (and they thought it would be a good idea to put him in the feild whist waiting for vet... ) Fortunetly they didnt.
Im not that good with the sight of human blood, but dont mind horsy or doggy blood... I am also calm in "exciting" moments for want of a better word, and can feel myself taking charge.. I think I'd be more help if I actually knew what I was doing was the totally right thing to do.
What do you think.
this also makes me think of the thread, that asked if we knew how to bandage a knee... I dont.... but said I'd probably be able to cope if I had too.... I did, but now feel it'd would have been better if I'd done it correctly so as not to cause more damage than what was already done.
