I'm thinking 'snowball's chance in hell' as I type this but I've got to give her a chance.
When we rented this place we also took on the house owner's companion pony. The pony actually belongs to the local trekking centre, but has been here for some years being a companion. Dolly, the pony, has suffered from laminitis long before we arrived. She was managed, and I use the term loosely, by the house owner, by being muzzled almost constantly, and shod on both fronts. last year when we took over I had her shoes removed, feet gently trimmed, threw away the grazing muzzle (which didn't fit her anyway) and kept her on very limited grazing on a diet of low grade hay. She really perked up, was walking much better, and looked so well that her trekking school owner didn't recognise her.
She's been very up and down since then, she had a serious bout of laminitis back in the summer, and two vets recommended she be PTS. I alerted the trekking school owner who refused to consider Dolly be PTS, instead she offered to have her back and put her out with her herd.......on 30 acres of grazing.. Hmmm, yes, quite. So it's been back to absolutely no grass whatsover for her, she's either confined to the barn or turned out in the school, and she's improved again. She obviously has a degree of pedal bone rotation but without X rays, which I can't afford and the her owner refuses to pay for, it's a bit of an unknown.
I'll cut to the chase...after a lot of not very friendly to-ing and fro-ing between me, the owner and the house owner, the owner has now washed her hands of the pony (her words) she said go ahead and have Dolly put to sleep but I would have to pay for it done, in fact she doesn't care what I do with her. We are moving next month. The house owner can't guanrantee that any new tenants would care for Dolly, and I won't have the space to take her with me.
So, I was thinking, is there anyone out there with a lonely laminitic who would like a similar companion? I've got a month to try and find another home for Dolly, or the unbearable will happen and I'll have to have her PTS. She'll never be a riding pony, but when she's well she's full of character, bright and intelligent. I got to the point with her last summer when I was playing games with her in the school, she just loved it, nobody had ever worked with her in any way before.
She about 11.2 hh, approx 10 years old, native type and very pretty. Fingers crossed here. C XXXX
