Those who own welsh x arabs, how do you have their manes and tails? long and flowing, or short and trimmed? im keeping my boys mane long, but im wondering about his tail, its been put up for a while, i took it down today and its at about mid pastern length at the moment, and im wondering whether to keep it long and native looking (its fairly thick) or to keep it a bit shorter. what do you do with yours?

He's not arab x welsh, but arab x connemara, if thats any use! ;D And I leave him as nature intended. Mane is long and tail is thin and wispy anyway, so not much I can do with that

I had a welsh/arab around the same stamp as yours Desperado, i left him au natural aside from leveling his tail once it trailed the ground, his mane came down past his shoulder, up into an arab plait for showing with proper plaited tail.

im very much thinking my boy may have connie in him somewhere, he apparently jumped 2 gates the other day to get to a mare (hes only 14.3- and the gates are about the size of the fence hes stood next to in the pic).

My previous pony Ali is arab x welsh and i left her mane and tail natural and it suited her much better than when it was pulled and trimmed, i think it depends on the horse and what you're doing with it (shows, hacking etc)

We think Willow is arab x welsh. Her mane is pulled and I keep her tail trimmed. I think she looks much smarter and it means when I hunt her mane will be much easier to plait.

as said before- depends on what you want to do showing wise. I have a welshxarab but he doesnt really have enough arab in him to justify showing him in part-bred arab classes. Arab classes specify the mane has to be long and un-plaited. but for anglo-arab or part bred arab classes they should follow general turnout guidelines and be pulled and plaited both tail and mane. For any native or part bred native classes both tail and mane have to be left natural and unplaited. If you are wanting to partake in show hunter/working hunter classes at which welshxarab or welshxTB seem to excel at then you will need to have plaitede mane and pulled tail.
so: part-bred arab classes= pulled and plaited Part-bred natives=unpulled and unplaited Hunter classes=pulled and plaited
this means it is not very helpful for the part bred owner- so i guess you will have to decide what line you wish to persue. Not all judges will penalise you if you enter an unplaited into a part-arab class if they also know that you are in a part-native class.Of course this generally rings true at smaller local shows but if you were aiming at county level im afraid you would have to definetly decide which way you were going to go.
My boy is more welsh than arab and so at local level he gets away with being unplaited- which suits him far more. He is bred to be a show hunter pony- and if he followed this route would have to be plaited and pulled- so i think i will stick to the local shows and concentrating on his new found jumpin ability as I hate pulling manes just as much as my boy hates having his pulled.
hope this helps- if you are still confused then there is a great book called:Showing secrets- the ultimate guide to showing horses and ponies by Carloyn Henderson. This aims to clarify exactly for people in our position.

so: part-bred arab classes= pulled and plaited Part-bred natives=unpulled and unplaited Hunter classes=pulled and plaited Part-bred natives should be shown to type, so pulled and plaited. In native type classes they should be shown uplaited.

this is my 13hh welshXarab- definetly more welsh than arab- he has dropped alot of weight since then- thats about 6 weeks after he came down with laminitis- so a bit podgy, but beautiful coat on him. This was the one time i tried pulling his mane- a haynet, and a few head butts to my face later........ he wasnt impressed so doubt we will try that again.
