Hi we have just received BHS approval at our yard and the only thing that we apparently need in to improve the signs around the yard, a written health and safety policy and written yard rules. I have always tried to keep the yard relaxed and the liveries have written contracts but can you help with what I should have in the a formal 'yard rules list'.
So far i've come up with: 1. no unsupervised children (a personl pet hate & already in their contract) 2. Wear hat hards in the school (again in contract) 3. Clear up your dog's poo 4. Clear up your horse's poo from school & yard
what else?
thanks!

Just a few I have thought of that may be useful to have- from experiences at our yard:
1)Please keep all gates closed (it sounds obvious but you will be amazed by the number of people who leave main yard gates open
2)Sweep up your mess - ie not just horse/dog poo but hay.straw/ bedding/farrier clippings - and have you thought about putting aside a bag for peope to put the baler twine in- as it can be useful for different things
3)keep hose pipes tied up when not in use
4)Make sure all lights are turned off when not in use
5)keep the muck heap tidy (if appropriate at your place) We have quite hard and fast rulings over our muck heap to ensure it is kept tidy and not allowed to blow all over the yard etc.

Thanks Kathryn I knew it would help to ask as i forgot about normal tidying up - we do have a couple of signs about this plus lights - occassionally people leave the school lights on which costs me £££'s. I'm quite liking the idea of having a few rules! I guess writing it all down means that at least people know where they stand.

No radios!!!!! It drives me up the wall in work, at my friend's yard, everywhere--Radio One or our local station spouting inane cr@p. Can't understand why no-one seems to be able to live their lives without a soundtrack--and a rubbish one at that!

No horse to be left out on its' own - ie when all the others have been brought in? (We automatically ensure this doesn't happen at our yard, kind of an unwritten rule really).

no children under 16 to get in horses etc without hats on
one livery yard had this case where a girl got kicked in head and ended up costing them 2.5million and their insurance only went up to 1 million

Don't tie horses up then go away for ages - dangerous for the tied horse & for anyone who needs to get past.
Don't handle other people's horses without permission unless it's an emergency.
If the yard gate is shut when you come in or go out then shut it behind you immediately.
Last person to leave the yard locks the tackroom, checks all lights are off & shuts all gates.

no children under 16 to get in horses etc without hats on one livery yard had this case where a girl got kicked in head and ended up costing them 2.5million and their insurance only went up to 1 million We have just had our yard contract re-newed with this type of thing added, but its not just for children it is for everyone, adults included. Bascially anyone entering a field with horses in must wear a hat, whether bringing in, turning out or checking your/others horse(s). Another good one to add: If a horses owner has a new sharer/loaner they must be notified/introduced to staff and must be shown a copy of contract, which applies to them equally. When hacking out, fluorescent tabards/coats must be worn. Hope these help

How about no smoking on the yard. Cars parked at there own risk (if you have cars in the yard).

No loose dogs Do not feed other peoples horses without their permission. No smoking on the site full stop. Close all gates, even if they have been left open by someone else, know of a bad accident due to everyone thinking the gate had been left open for a reason, when in fact the first person in hadn't bothered to shut, pony got loose and got hit on the road. Clean up your horses droppings when leaving the school, provide them with the equipment to do so and have a ring with a head collar and lead rope to tie up to and there is no excuse at all.

Lots of good ideas there but be cautious about what you do put up on the yard, you don't want too many or it gives the wrong feel to the place.
Perhaps you could split them up and leave them in appropriate places eg..
Please shut the gate ......on the gates you want shut A sign outside the school... Please wear a hat in the school at all times Clear away droppings and TURN OFF the lights

What about what happens if someone doesn't pay the livery. Time to come and go - on some yards you have to be gone by 6.00 p.m. on a Sunday unless you have been to a competition.

Thanks very much for all these suggestions. Many of them are already in the liveries' written contracts. With the BHS approval and the recent case (as per Cieron's post) I thought it wise to actually have a set of yard rules that can be put on the notice board so everyone knew where they stood.
