For those who have renamed, or named their own horses (registered anmes and stable names) what gives you inspiration? Ive have recently renamed 2 of my horses, one horses ive had for 5 yrs, but picked a name i didint really like as the passport deadline was closing in, and the other is a new horse that i have chosen a new stable name and registered name for (new life, new name). I have a notepad at the side of me almost full of names, i have welsh, ango-saxon, celtic, norse, native american and cornish names, soem are general names, some are dieties, some have meanings and some dont. I like individual names, and names that mean something, if i know someone or something with the name, i wont use it, even if it suits my horse, it just feels wrong, lol.
The names i came up with are- for my new boy, Shay-means admirable or hawk like, and depending on where you read sometimes means red headed, its of celtic/gaelic origin. Im registering him as Desperado, i heard the song by journey south, and read the lyrics and i think they suit him, he was a bit of a trveller/wanderer in his past homes and hes been passed around a bit, he also has a hardened edge about him. My my girl Amber, ive re-registering her as Wyrd Tanith. Wyrd means fate in anglo-saxon (seemed like fate that i got her) and Tanith means serpernt lady (amber pulls a face we call 'the snake face' when warding other horses off her food), it was also the name of a godess, who was godess of love, fertility, the moon and stars.
so whats your inpiration and the names you came up with?

with breeding arabs, i try to pick arabic names, i find the names that the americans call them, too sickly, example Divine Tranquility. Lovely horse but your going to look a prat shouting that in the field, that is if someone doesn't cart you off to the local nut house first. LOL The kids also choose names, we have 2 black cobs called ENGIE and BENGIE. But the rabbit's called 'My new bike' ?

I have always tried to stick with a name if a pony has already been named. I did change one from Jilly to Millie as I already had a Jilly. Ive always been told that it is really unlucky for the horse to change its name.

I specifically wanted a welsh name for my baby so looked at welsh names online. Ive always liked the name Fleur so when I saw it with its welsh spelling of Fflur it chose itself.

I've never really had the chance to name a horse (sniff), as I have never had a youngster and I am a bit superstitious about changing a horse's name.
However, when I bought Tilly, she had previously been known as Tally and Tully. I thought these were daft, and as she is soo pretty and feminine, I thought Tilly suited her better.
I hate Tommy's name, but again I am too superstitious to change it. In the unlikely event we eventually get to do some competitive dressage, I might put his name down as Tomba, who was also a gorgeous blonde Austrian, just like Tommy!

I was always lead to believe that changing names was unlucky too, but you seem to find the same names come up again and again. Maybe we should start another thread asking who has the most unusual name for their horse?

Desperado - you have chosen beautiful names . Tex was already named when I had him and I'm superstitious about changing it. I would like to call him Storm, it would suit him. Or something Nordic. Do you know any Nordic names that sound a bit like Tex?!! On another DG there was a beautiful Friesian mare called Pagan, which I loved.

I have named 3 of the 4 horses/ponies I have and one donkey. We(my sister in law and I) named the donkey rolo as he was not passported and the dealer was not certain of his name(a shame I think). He looks like the shrek donkey and is our smallest donkey. I named my anglo arab Simmien(should be spelt Simoen but I added a twist so he would have no problems being registered)That came from the bible,a fantastic sourse of names.I also love the name judas escariot but as he was a bady its not very apt.Judahh is nice though.Never heard of a horse called that. I named jigsaw jack because he is coloured and jack suits him(cheeky pony)and my friend and I named Bella(stable name, registered as something black mayo.I am not calling a pony mayo..)Bella suits her very well.Shes a well built black 2 year old and is just over 13hh. I think names should suit the indavidual

I have renamed two ponies and picked a theme. "Indiana", wanted a USA state with obvious "A" pronounciation, and added "Hurricane" for registration as that describes her quite well! "Casper" because it suited him, for his passport I wanted either the name of a constellation or a song title with "Gold" in it (he was palomino), I picked "Love Over Gold" because we loved him and the title was ironic to me...
