Do you every get dishearted when you go to help somebody and you know that they are not going to take any notice to your advise?
i'm just been noisey hear after reading ' giving advise' thread.
Me and my husband take a few horses to teach to drive and we sometimes buy youngsters from auctions. We are not dealers, we just get pleasure out of teaching young horses and as long as it covers their costs we're happy.
We got a 3 year old colt to do, seemed odd as the owners were manchester area and we are 1 1/2 hours north. Nice horse just halter broken, not too colty. He had a muscle damage to 1 of his shoulders but the vet said it would not affect him and i could not find out how he had done this. So i mouth him, get him used to harness and blinkers, started long reining, everything ok. After 3 weeks owner demand horse should be finished, when i explained i had just nicely got him long reining, got told so so could do it in 3 days and he had already been mouthed and long reined. Rather upset i decided not to tell him where to stick his horse, i explained i always started at the beginning anyway i wanted to be sure i had brakes and steering. We long reined round the roads everything was great. We moved the cart down the drive, as our drive has slippy stones and is steep, not a good place for the 1st time with a cart on, and he was terrified of it just parked there. So i got my mum to push the wheelbarrow with stones infront of him, then behind him, again fine, but would not go past the cart. so i tied him and a haynet up next to it for a while that seemed to work. When we put him in the cart you could tell he'd been in 1 before and he wanted to run, so we got him out, he was very frightened, re tthink.Next dayi tied an old shaft to one side and did ground work, then next day on both sides and turned him in the pen, left him to figure it out. When we put him back in the cart he was a different horse, and we could drive him anywhere. The owners came we took them round the village but he wanted him to go down the main road, this is heavy, main road, more like motorway, when we refused he huffed and puffed and said he'd have to getting him pulling the 4 GAS bottles around the manage loose everyday before he drove him. My heart sank i knew i'd done all that work for that idiot to undo it in 10 seconds. And guess what the hole in his shoulder matched with the end of the shafts. The last i heard he was rearing and was getting gelded, he would of made a good stallion.
