ive just ended up hanging up on my Dad. i had rang to tell him that Ryan is being refered to Huntingdon as our nearest hospital doesnt have the facilities to do syntography on his back and therefore i need to sort transport out. and my dads answer was... its going to cost too much and he probably wont get better so we may as well send him or meat now!
the vets seem to think he has a decent chance at getting better but my Dad has decided hes not... and no matter how many times i tell him my horse is never going for meat in a milion yrs will he listen? if i here the words 'well i have to make some money back on him somehow' again i am going to kill him!!!! how is anybody that heartless... and how did they raise me as there daughter?
i actually hate men!

That's not good!!!
Have you signed the bit in the back of the passport forbidding him to go for meat or human consumption? If not, do it then he can no way suggest it!!
As a horse lover yourself, you have to try and do what is best for your horse, sending for meat is a quick option and I couldn't do it so I know where your coming from.
Hopefully your dad will realise how much this horse means to you x

(((((((((HUGS)))))))) I come from a non-horsey family, I can empathise. You need to trust your own heart and follow it.

hmm men, I know exactly how you feel. My dad insensitively did the "You'll have to sell the horse!!!" nasty routine with me last week (but to my face) when my car had a big repair bill courtesy of a ditch and metal gate. He didn't expect the very distraught reaction lol of hysterical crying, he did everything he could to help after that and even managed to mend the car himself so proved he wasn't really that insensitive after all, he was just looking at it from a practical/money point of view which is fair enough - men are like that lol.
Keep trying to get him better and try not to worry

but sophie doesn't come from a non-horsey family...do you?
some people say things like that because it makes things easier to cope with. I know it seems a weird way of going about it but I'm sure your dad doesn't actually mean it. Hope everything goes well.

When my pony had his mystery lameness they said he needed nuclear scintigraphy. It was going to cost us £1500 the insurance wouldn't pay and we just couldn't afford it. In the end they found the problem by xraying him. I hope you find out what's wrong with Ryan

It's a bit rich your dad taking that attitude now Sophie when he ignored your many requests to get Ryan vetted before you bought him.

totally fed up... ryan is insured but the vets are talking about it running up a big bill (ie over the £5000 limit. my family is a little wierd in wheather we are horsey or non horsey me and my sister have horses and my dads family have horses however he isnt all that interestedand certainly doesnt understand the emotional attachment side of things! ema which insurance company were you with and ahy wouldnt the cover the syntography? i no i am over emotional about things but ive made the decission that ifthe vets tell me the best thing for Ryan is to have him PTS then i will, but if they think he will be happy out in the field then i dont feel i have the right to take that from him. and i certainly am not going to make any decissions about the mater untill i know what the problem is.

To be fair to your Dad, that's a lot of money to find when supporting a family. I really hope things work out for you and Ryan Sophie. You've really had a tough time.
