Went for a nice hack today with two others, and he wasn't too bad, until we got back when upon attempting to go away from the others he reared . A new thing for him, got him through it but everytime we crack an obstacle (e.g excessive laziness or bucking) he finds another one. How should I deal with rearing? I had just dropped my stick to go for a canter.

Sounds like good old evasion to me -
I'd re create that situation which set him off but with him on the long lines - far far safer and easier to deal with; sounds like he needs more faith in you - as in what you say is THE best option. That doen't mean using a stick or shouting - just building his confidence in you. Long lining is fantastic for this as scary situation are far less scary for you; simply cos your not on board. Once everything is going well on the lines, introduce the ridden work.
