My 2yr old Mare who was poorly back in November took a turn for the worse yesterday and we had the vet out for the 3rd time, this time he thinks it could be Salmonella. I have heard about this but have never experienced it first hand and would be grateful for any advice to help her make a speedy recovery. Today her temp was 39.6, she was not eating but was drinking, and she had severe diarrhea (sp) the vet gave her antibiotic injections and has taken more blood and stall samples, she has bute and antibiotics to be taken twice a day with her feed for the next 10 days. He mentioned giving her Natural yogurt and maintain procedures to prevent x-contamination. She has lost loads of weight and looks a mess as well as being very lethargic (sp), hopefully over the next few days she will pick up. I hope you all Had a good Xmas and thanks in advance for your advice

It's related to grass sickness. If you go to the grass sickness trust site, you'll find loads of good nursing care advice. www.grasssickness.org.uk/

It is generally caused by horses ingesting the faeces (SP) of other animals or birds. This could be a minute amount on grass, in water or in hay or haylage.
The advice your vet has given you is the best route to take with something as potentially serious as this. A friend's horse had this a couple of years ago and went on to make a full recovery thankfully. She had live yoghurt in her feeds and that helped to settle her stomach.
Hope all goes well and that your girl makes a quick and full recovery Jackie.
