I've bought a treeless saddle for Bertie and am in the process of getting a girth for it, but it has me a bit bamboozled. His regular girth is 48" and I was told that if you measured from elbow to elbow that would give the right measurement for a dressage girth.
But I've measured him and it was 16 inches-this can't be right-he's a heavyweight 15.3 cob-anyone got any ideas?

Dressage girth is normal girth -20 inches, so you'd need a 28", but it does vary a bit with the length of girth straps so its good to put the saddle on and measure to check that the predicted length would be about right.

Best dressage girth for treeless - at least for our Fhoenix, is without doubt the Professional's Choice. Has a soft grippy neoprene backing which is velcroed on for easy washing, and is elasticated both ends.
Never buy a girth elasticated only one end, it will create unenven stress ( can cause a tree to twist in a treed saddle) and also make a treeless slip to one side.
Always ensure that the dressage girth is long enough to ensure that the elbow doesnt come back and hit the buckle- this can even chip the elbow or cause the horse to stumble or fall. We advise having the girth no more than three inches below the bottom of the saddle flap.

Many thanks all. I googled the professionals choice one and didn't really get anywhere with it, but I fould a wintec one that is elasticated in the middle. But, following Heather's words of warning, I think I'll wait till the saddle arrives and measure for the girth then. Its just so annoying not being able to ride at the mo (the saddle he has is very scary-its a jumping saddle with an unfeasibly high back and I can't really dismount from it-I've had a badly pulled muscle since my last effort and don't want to repeat the experience!!) Still, he seems to enjoy in-hand work for now

We havent found the Wintec ones nearly as non slip as the Pro Choice. We sell them on the EE website shop, if you have any difficulty finding one- they are so well made and comfortable for the horse. An endurance rider friend in Holland introduced me to them some years ago, and I have never used anything else since, with treed or treeless!

BnB, sherb's body size is about the same as your lad, he wears a 48 inch normall girth and a 28 dressage with his treeless, I reckon your safe to order either a 26 or 28, my 28 goes to the last holes on my treeless.

I like the wintec girth...it is elasticated but in the middle... easy cleaning, and easy to do up, when "up above"
