He didn't actually use his whip!!!! Less of the Robert bashing!!! He was having a bit of trouble with the horse all night and was desperate to get it moving forward to a big fence, i would never hit my horse as i personally do not believe in it for me but we hardly witnessed a display of brute force!!! Yes, he ultimately did make a mistake as it really wasn't the greatest idea to unbalance your horse like that whilst trying to jumpt 2m+ but it was hardly terrible abuse and its not like any of us would have the skill and courage to come down to a wall like that (and if you do can i borrow it please???!!!) so perhaps we should be a bit less quick to judge

Not a fan of Dim Stockdale but did like his comtribution tonight....but Joe and his stripy pants (got up close at Scope and not only is he YUMMY but he wears strippy panys under his white jods lol) is my favourite. My heart was in my mouth but William deserved to win over RatRobert....they way he rode was superb!! I do think it was just youthfull exuberance that made him forget himself ETA....cross posted with Vic....I'm not a Robert fan anyway so I'm not Robert bashing because he used a whip...just Robert bashing because I always do but I also have a lot of respect for anyone who has the guts to jump the kind of heights these riders do

Sue, Xefira is with me at the moment. She's lovely. Hurrah! I am *so* pleased. Her dam is my most favourite mare. Xefi should be something really special.

I do think that Robert is the less 'feeling' of the three younger Whitakers. But he is so little and it cant help having tiny legs, when balancing on a horse over fences of that height! Mind you, it doesnt seem to affect the skill of old Geoff Billington, who has legs that he terms 'me stumps'!!

I suspect William is a star in the making, as you say beautiful quiet riding and the horse jumped superbly. We might be a small country but we're still a force to be reckoned with!!!

Wasnt it so good, I really was routing for him to do well considering everyone in the pre-event interviews said he didnt have a cat in hells chance, so glad he showed them. ;D
Also, don't forget Robert is leading rider of the show, and has won something in the region of 12 puissances with this horse alone, he obviously does something right. Tonight was one of those things and it just didn't go his way, but face it, if we we're all perfect all the time, what would be the fun and point of competing?

I watched this last night and do have to agree what a family.
Some of the landings though made me shudder. Some much power coming down very quickly on the horses legs.

they are so talented! how great would it be to be a member of that family. as william said last night after winning the puissance, if your in the whitaker family, your destiny has already been paved out for you! my last name is whittaker, but unfortunatly im not realted to them but i love showjumping!! lol i just dont know where they get their horses and their confidence to jump that wall!

No he didn't use the whip but the horse knows what the whip is for and was distracted when it was raised. It also put Robert out of balance which didn't help the horse either. I didn't bash Robert, I just raised my whip at him a little!!!!

I watched it too - didn't even know it was on til I put TV on, and was dithering whether to look. There is often such awful riding and scary take-offs in the Puissance.
Agree with all comments about young William (who I'd never heard of before!) and thought Robert was impressive. He def made a mistake, but I'm sure he'll learn from it and not blame his horse as many others would have done.

have briefly met ellen whitaker, shes really down to earth and very friendly. This is one of the reasons I am so pro them - several years ago I had a very difficult grade A Luso stallion on loan, and I phoned them for advice. The fact that they didn't know me from adam didn't matter, Ellen spent a good half hour talking to me about the options open.

I use to have the same horse dentist as john and michael about 15 years ago,and he told me they were always drunk and sleeping in the lorry!( usually fell out when he arrived apparently!) Fantastic riders and trainers though, maybe its all the booze keeping them relaxed,I would need at least one full bottle of brandy before I would face jumps that size!lol!

I think drunkeness probably improves most people's riding. Unlike a car, the horse is probably better able than the "driver" to make judgements! Aslo, I gather it can really ease those aches and pains. I was once told I ride as if I am drunk......
