What are your favorite horse names, past or present? Not fav horses, just the names of real horses which you like best, mine are Merrily-a-Monach, Lilac Time, Oakley Bubbling Spring the names a like least include Frisky--a small pony at the riding school when i was a kid, we were all terrified of him coz we thought he'd buck and stuff, silly name for a quiet kids riding pony------ and N -----, belonging to a large black horse at same establishment, also Cigarette, a show pony in the 1940's. not all that keen on the name Red Rum either. What are your favs and most hated? ?

Hi Joto, do you mean "Merely a Monarch" Annily Drummond Hay's eventer ?? --------------Fabulous horse Also I used to work with Oakly Bubbling Spring . His stablename was" Bounce" and he was one of the most perfect gentlemen you could wish to meet. His son, whom I also looked after was called "Oakley Bubbling Fun" which I think is also a good name. All my stock are named after ballets, and I particularly like Anastasia ( pronounced the Russian way) Firebird and Rainbow Bandid. I also always wanted to name a pony "Squirrel" when I was a child ( I read it in a book) I can't think of any names I hate really, except one of my boys had the stablename Damian which suited him as he was very black and stunning. When I sold him, it changed to Nigel--------------------I still find it difficult to call him that.

I had an ex racer called Psycho Steve, which didn't fill you with confidence. Also, calling 'Steven!' across the field always felt a bit silly!

One name that makes me smile at the moment is 'Sonic'. He's a stocky gypsy cob, a lovelt novice ploddy cob, but i don't think he'll ever hope to go 'super-sonic!'
The name Sonic makes me think of really fast things like concorde......bless him!
I also really like the name Debutante, she was a graceful, delicate arab mare i used to know - it really suited her!

I had a brilliant, if most unappropriately named horse called Useless! One of my favourites was The Tetrach, but looking through Tb bloodlines (via my QH stallion) there are some fabulous names,
Pot-8-o's, Spud, Snake, Camel, Whalebone, Squirt, Whynot, Old careless, Cream cheeks, Clubfoot.
Names I really wouldn't choose are human names, 5 out of the 6 horses I can see from my window as I write are called: Lola, Robin, Fergus, Ruby and Isabella, thankfully I can't take credit for naming all of them other than Isabella who is a palomino and named for Queen Isabella (or Ysabella) who bred palominos. Zeus was called Luke when I bought him, he was NOT a Luke.
I did have a little mare called Darker, because she was darker than the other grey mare I had running with her.

Must admit I am a bit biased but my fave horses name, is my my own ginger chops, Summer Solstice, as that's the day he was born on, so I never forget his birthday.
I did some research on my WB's family tree and found some amazing horses names going back to the 1600's such as Grey Bloody Buttocks, Young Giantess, Bob Booty, Sister to Old Country Wench (!), Spanker and Cream Cheeks!

I had a coloured cob once called Rags after the blue peter pony. We had a new forest on loan for a while called Spirit and he was full of it!
