How can they say that to PTS a dog that stands a good chance of being 'turned round' and rehomed is a bad thing?
Some councils are so short sighted in their appraoach to things
We have rescue collies here at our farm, we get them for a variety of reason. We're not dependaent on the council here for our actions, but we pay for them out of our own pockets (probably explains why we're permanently skint) but we retrain and rehome them and check on them for the first year they are in their new homes, if we don;t like what we find or they are not beingtreated properly we take them back again, only had to do that once though.
One of our #best is one called Millie, she was terrible when she came here, flea infested, snarly and had no idea of affection at all. After 18 months of quiet encouragement she turned into and still is one of the most friendly willing and lovoing dogs we ever had, she has a new home now with a retired farmer and she and him are inseperable.
I hope you keep doing the great work you do, it gives us pleasure beyond description when we send a new happy healthy dog out into the world to a new family.

The problem is procedural, and how to get around legislation.. This can be done by writing a new procedure, but then it has to be passed by councillors. As it stands the people who dont want their dogs sign them over to the council. Because I have good working relations with the people on the call desk (was one myself till a couple of weeks ago) and get on well with the dog wardens and animal health we have been shortcutting the procedure, in as much as soon as someone registers their intention, I have immediately started looking for homes, and in absolute emergencies, collected the dogs myself from the old owners. The problem being as soon as the dogs are signed over they become Council Property. So, I have been "pinching " Council Property, and a few of us have been aiding and abetting. I have not been in trouble for this, but until we can get it passed by Elected Members I have to stop it. The department is supporting me on this, I just need to make sure that the Elected Members will.... Everyone involved has used their own time, resources and effort to put this together, they just need to know it is not a business (second hand dog shop) and I have not used my position for personal gain

Anyone able to lend support to this could email me, just a one liner, saying your name, area, and that you are aware of the good work that members of this board have done in all coming together to raise the profile of unwanted dogs, especially the ones in Barnsley and that quite a few have found loving permanent homes all over the country that are suited to their individual needs, including dogs with behavioural problems that have gone on to work or become good companions. No insults please, we are trying to get them on our side. I can forward them to the appropriate officer, thanks... and it is not just the people who have taken dogs I am thanking here, it is the people who have brought attention to the threads, kept them up, offered lifts and suggestions who have also contributed to this. jacquelinedodds@barnsley.gov.uk

Jackiedo, I will contact Bea and get her to help - I know how happy she is with little Teddy (and how much he, little Teddy, is helping my son get over the very broken heart which sent him down to Bristol)

Jackiedo it sounds like you are between a rock and a hard place at the moment. I'm a great believer in giving rescue dogs good 'forever' homes. I have three rescue lurchers, the third one I took on a few months ago after he'd been found on the roof of a single storey building in Swindon, screaming in agony with his leg smashed to pieces. He was emaciated, and in a terrible state and close to death. The vets couldn't save his leg and in the end it was amputated. When he came to me in March he was very nervous and found men very scary. However in just five months he's gained confidence, realised that the human race are not out to cause him pain and that life is for living, and all this on three legs! I also came across Frog Dog a few months back, when my chiro came to treat Yogi and told me that her friend who worked at a vets in Chepstow was distraught as some collie owners had come in with this young collie who they wanted the vet to put to sleep as he didn't fit into their family unit anymore! They had bought him as a young pup from a farmer and then kept him cooped up in a flat in a town, as anyone who knows collies, knows that that is far from idea. I advertised him on here and Jen came to the rescue and has given him the most wonderful home, he's not straight forward and needed a knowledgable home, but thanks to the DG and Jen , that is what he has. All animals deserve a chance, it's humans that abuse them and screw them up and it's up to humans to sort them out. Just one pic of Azzie my 3 leggedy lurcher!

Can you get support from Dogs Trust, Blue Cross or other well known and respected dog rehoming organisations? They have thought it through, their reasons for rehoming rather than PTS must be worth the council taking on board?
