Bran and I are finally going to a local riding club show this weekend...it will be our second ever show, and to be honest I don't really know what I'm doing...! We're doing M&M in hand. I know the procedure but want to know the little ins and outs so I don't look like a wally...I made a faux pas last time - I didn't realise when you turn and trot back towards the judge you are supposed to be on the outside of the horse on the turn...(it didn't matter incidently coz we still came 2nd!). What I want to know is when walking around, I'm keen for Bran to stride out but what happens when we catch up with the one in front? Do we go around the outside of them, or the inside? Any other pearls of wisdom? Bear in mind it's only a friendly local riding club show! Thanks!

Try and keep your space as best you can, with at least a horse's length between you (but more if space allows). It's rude to overtake someone or circle infront of the judge, so make sure you get your space before you go down the side where the judge is watching. To create a space you have several options - to create a little bit of space, go deeper into the corners or slow down your walk as you go behind the judge. To create more space infront of you, you can halt behind the judge then carry on. If you're going much faster than the horse infront you can overtake (always on the inside, and never infront of the judge) or you can circle into a bigger gap. What you decide to do will depend on the circumstances and what feels right at the time. Always be aware of what's going on behind you too, so you don't interfere with them.
When you stand your pony up, stand at right angles to the line up, and if possible with the pony facing up hill to give a better impression. Stand infront of them and stretch their neck forward and prick their ears by picking some grass and letting it go, or shaking something like a tictac packet. When you do your run out, go straight back towards the judge, then pass them in trot and trot right back to your place in the line if you can.
Do you know the correct way to stand up for the judge?

Thank goodness for Cubic! Okay, sounds good, I'll do my best. When standing in the line up Bran doesn't have an awful lot of patience....last time I kept turning him in circles and kept my cool, and eventually he stood still. Standing up for the judge - is this when you walk out prior to doing your run out? If not no I don't know the correect way - enlighten me!

Here is a pic of how he should stand The judge should be able to see all four legs when standing side on to the horse, and strictly, when she goes to look at the other side you should move the horse so the hind leg on the judges side is back. If you have problems with him standin though, once you get him right leave him as he is
