Im thinking of doing this with my 16yr old ex-showjumper,but help i don't know what i should be wearing or how Gally should be turned out (only normally do sj or dressage). Also what to expect in the ring? do you ride as a group in all paces then do indivdual show? do you trot up in hand? Sorry to sound thick but bit of a show beginner ;D. I was thinking of gettong a Chiltern Rider card (not there is hope in h*ll i will qualifiey but hey stranger things have happened at sea!)

I turn out in a tweed jacket, canary jods and long black boots, brown tack, Lizzie is an ex grade a and i find she doesnt really fit into a hunter type or a riding type so im glad there is veteran classes. If you register with the VHS, depending on the show..you will have to run up in-hand. Some i have some i havnt at county level. You ride around in a group and then will do your individual show which should be a basic figure of 8 showing trot and canter on both reins with a small amount of walk at the begining/end. Hope this helps

Ok getting the drift now lol,do you use snaffle bridle or double? Plaited i assume? Heck got cream breaches (sp) black gaiters/boots (look like long boots you can wear them up to fox hunter level sj) is this ok? Also do you use numah or not or if so what colour??? Really sorry but told you i was thick when it came to this stuff!

Your gaiters are fine as long as they're leather (rather than suede), you can use a double or a snaffle, but at higher levels many will be in a double or pelham with 2 reins. Plaited and trimmed is correct, a pulled tail is best, but plaited is fine. If you've got a discreet numnah that's the same colour as the saddle, that's great, but if not you can always go without if you're horse is happy to.

I was considering veteran classes as well this year, but in hand as I am too big for the ponies. One is sec B the other small highland so I understand they have to be shown with free manes and tails. I've got a little white in hand halter for the sec b, is that ok? Also what do I wear? I've only done in hand once in a veteran class at a very little local show where the judge threatened to throw me out because I didn't have a hat on. This kind of put me off because she was then very rude about my horse! Do I have to wear a hat? What other clothing, waistcoat, shirt or jacket? Riding boots? Jodphurs or light coloured trousers? I see pics of people in trainers and no hat so I'm very confused...

It sounds like the judge was plain rude, don't let it put you off (they're not all like that!) Some people show welsh cobs without a hat and wearing trainers because they have to run so fast, but for your ponies you should be in trousers (generally light if your pony has dark legs and vice versa), shirt, tie, tweed jacket, smart shoes or boots that you can run in and definately a hat (riding hat, beagler, bushman's hat, trillby - anything smart that doesn't look like you're off to Ladies Day!). Wearing a hat traditionally shows respect for the judge, and at bigger shows you may not be allowed in the ring without one, even to groom for someone. Here's a photo of me showing a show hunter pony to give you an idea (it's the same dress for this kind of pony as for yours) - ideally my trousers would be shorter and less baggy, but I came back from uni very podgy and had to borrow some!!

Thankyou that's really helpful. I know that some are nice, it's just on your first go it kind of puts you off, I don't mind constructive criticism, but just telling me what I'm doing is wrong is a bit unhelpful...now I just need to keep her clean! As she's native that means leaving her feathers free? I have tried chalk powder in the past but never seem to get it quite right..she's dun with 2 stockings and 2 socks and a 'salt and pepper' mane and tail. I see a lot of show ponies with huge amounts of make-up on which seems a bit absurd, but should I put a little vaseline on the grey areas of the face to make it a little shinier? Or just bath her and keep her clean rather than use 'products'? Also do I need quartermarks? Are they just for show, or are they meant to enhance something? I'm a complete novice when it comes to showing but I'd like to have a go. xxx

For a native, keep things natural. Your section B can be discreetly trimmed (jawline and ears if they're fluffy, and some tidy the tail), but leave your Highland as they are unless you're skilled at trimming without anyone knowing you've trimmed! Make-up and quater marks aren't suitable for natives, they're more for the plaited types and occasionally show cobs. As long as you're both neat, clean and tidy, you'll be fine.

Thankyou so much Cubic (now getting our wardrobe together ;D),hopefully going to show on 20th (as long as we dont have hail, snow, hurricanes! LOL) My gaiters are leather & have been practicing a little "show" to do not taking to seriously as dont know how Gally will behave.....depends if he is in "showjumping mode" then he will pull like a train & buck etc! Took 5 dressage shows for him to settle & stop looking for the showjumps ;D

Well we did it!! A big THANKYOU & (((hugs))) to Cubic for all your help & advise. I was really p**ing my pants about cantering in the ring with others as Gally ONLY goes in front on hacks (or he pulls my arms out & tanks off!). But he was a angel only got a tad strong! I was worried about our "show" as im a virgin to any "ring craft" i was worried about making a plum of us both lol. However Gal was a good boy bless him & only got sticky in right canter.......... to my shock we came 4th!! I was so chuffed judge just said to open up his strides more & then stand good chance of being placed higher (she must be alien or something : So once again thanks Cubic
