I know that everyone will agree that if the DG is going to rehome Merlin it has a big responsibility to him. I know I also have some concerns about the distance he will have to travel if he is to come to England. One of our IH members is a vet for the Brooke Hospital for Animals and she is coming to the barbarque at Ian's on Thursday night. I'd feel better if those involved could sit round with her for a while on the evening and really talk things through to be sure the best is being done for Merlin and horses in general. I know everyone has the best intentions and will want to take the time to go through this really carefully.

P.S. Don't forget on the 'Association' page we also have a page 'Ways You Can Help Horses and Ponies'if you feel you'd like to do something in your local areas.

Hi Kelly
I was chatting with Pauhla about the very valid concerns expressed by you and others regarding Merlin and his immediate and long-term needs, and it is very clear that a full review of
the situation is required (and is in progress!!) with the various options being carefully considered to ensure the best possible outcome for him: that is obviously the single most important thing here. Achieving this is certainly a complicated operation! But as you say, taking responsibility for the life of a horse is a serious matter. I think that one of the slight “glitches” for want of a better word is that Sandra in Spain is not contactable at weekends. Due to the amazing generousity of IH people, rescuing Merlin has become a reality rather than a plan incredibly fast! Now Sandra, Pauhla, Lorraine etc need to have a kind of “virtual meeting” to assess where things are at and how to best proceed so that Merlin gets the best deal possible from now on, and I’m sure that they will update the DG as soon as they can, so many of us feel involved now! Just the administration aspect of moving horses in and around Europe is a major task: a lot of people are putting a lot of effort into helping Merlin, but then I think they are the sort of people who will always do their utmost to help anyone or any animal in trouble if they can. I admire them greatly, I hope they will feel free to call on me and all the other people who have offered help if they need to, and I just remain incredibly impressed by what like-minded people can achieve when they get together! Fantasttic! Keep on keeping on everyone!!

Kelly I have dropped youa quick line but I have spoken to Sandra today and most of the problems have been sorted. He is going into rehab in Spain for a month and then will be brought over by a professional trnasport company. A committee will be st up to oversee all the details of homing him and to take ultimate responsibility for his future. I wont' be able to make the BBQ on Thurs as we have a meeting to go to, but any ideas and info. woudl be very gratefully received.

I wonder if you could ask the vet about the merits of moving his stablemate Polo (?) who has the severe arthritis from a warm dry country to rainy cold Britain. I still think we should try and buy the horse but I'm not convinced the best thing for him would be to transport him to the UK. Perhaps we can find somewhere in the South of France. As I'm not a vet I have no idea if climatic conditions affect arthritis in horses. But my dad has arthritis and tends to go to warmer climates in winter because his condition is better.

I know what you mean Sara but there is very little chance of buying the other two at the moment. Now we also know his age, I feel that you are right that he shouldn't be moved far. However, if in the (unilikely event) he will be sold, I personally feel that this is not something we should attempt to deal with ourselves. He is not in a good physical state, is very old and the only reasonable and kind solution for him would be to try a home for him to retire to somewhere in Spain, as close by as possible and then see how he goes.
Getting Merlin out is one thing, but Polo, I truly feel, and after a lot of soul searching, would not be best served by being moved far.We do not have a diagnosis as to the cause of his lameness and at 24 you would ahve to think very very carefully before he was put through any sort of treatment.Being fatalistic, I think we need to do what we can to secure and maintain Merlins furute for the rest of his life and leave Junior and Polo in the lap of the Gods for the moment. Then if the situation arrises where he needs re-homing then perhaps we coudld consider paying for a vet to look at him in the first instance, give a diagnosis and a prognosis and take it from there.

Thanks Pauhla. I'm hoping Daniel will change his mind later in the year.
Is the place Merlin is being moved to tonight some kind of refuge or a livery stables? Who is paying Merlin's keep there and veterinary attention? Have we enough in the pot to cover it?
Does he need tack, rugs, anything?

It is a livery yard and although Sandra is covering the bills for the moment we should hopefully be able to cover it from the money we raise. It costs 120 Euros a month which is about £80 and we need to budget for approx. £100 to cover the vet inspection and paperwork etc. I think it cost about180 Euros (£120) last time but that was for Laura and Paddy the greyhound who Sandra also rescued and rehomed.
For the moment he should be ok equipment wise. They had a heatwave when I was there and it was up to 42 degrees in places and July/August is apparently the hottest time so I think he'll be fine without rugs LOL. but if he needs anything then I'm sure Sandra will let us know.

I'd like to help Sandra with the livery bills - it doesn't seem fair that she should pick up the tab.
Sandra, please email me your Dutch account details (sara.lewis@swing.be) and hubby will give Dutch friends money on Sunday to pay in Monday morning.
