Today is a big day for Merlin. This evening we are buying him and taking him to the rehab place where Laura was for the 2 months before she was recovered enough to make her trip to Belgium. Merlin will be staying in the same field as Laura did and have it all to himself. I heard he's never been in a field before so in this way he can get used to it - there are many horses in the fields surrounding him and his field has lush grass and shadow.
Although Merlin is not thin or emaciated, he has swollen tendons, mud fever and thrush, contracted feet and shrivelled frogs and a rubbed shoulder from lying on the concrete floor of his stable where he is tethered and has no shavings. We hope that with a month of rest he'll be well enough to travel to England!!
Unfortunately Daniel was adamant in not wanting to sell Junior and Polo (who is 24 and has worked for Daniel for 20 years and he still doesn't think he deserves retirement). He said possibly, when he found other quiet enough horses willing to cart little children around in the heat of the day, hour after hour...
We have spoken to Sandra and Kelly and we are extremely grateful to them for being willing to go all the way to Madrid to pick Merlin up. However, it seems more efficient (especially as it is only Merlin now) to have Merlin go with professional transporters, also so he'll have (equine) company in the truck. So any advice as to which transporting company to go with will be greatfully received.
Just one more issue to tell all of you who have donated money and are supporting Merlin. We have set up a committee of 5 Merlin-supporters to guarantee Merlin will always have a good life as of today and act in case of any surprises. We want you all to know that we are being professional with his future and will talk to Donna B about his "mental damage" (he is extremely traumatised and scared witless of people). We obviously have to help him psychologically and will do so with IH methods.
We'll keep you informed as we go along with Merlin and once he is in England, I'm sure anybody can visit him )

Heee Klompje, way to go girl! Hartstikke goed! Fingers crossed for tonight.
The field Laura was in sounds good; it looked lovely, and the yard is wonderful, wiht lots of turn-out and big fields where horses can live and play together, in the shade, with actual GRASS! Hopefully he can finally relax a little there, and get used to the idea that not all humans are evil. I can confirm that he is totally terrified of people right now, it was shocking and awful to watch his reaction to Pauhla entering his stable, and even more to Daniel. I think he would have clawed his way through the stable walls if he hadn't been chained up.
Liefs en veel sterkte, Olga

Well done Sandra, you can feel justifiably proud of your achievement. I hope the move this evening goes well and please give Merlin a gentle rub from me and let him know this is how it will be from now on. His pain is over!

I've heard nothing but good things about John Parker International - based at Hythe in Kent. If you want references let me know.

Hi mlc, I would be interested in knowing your good references with John Parker. He does many transports all over Europe but the 3 times I have dealt with them, they have always delayed, but if this has been fluke, I'd like to know it. I wouldn't like to cross them off my list as they go so often and have good people. Thanx!!

Can you let me have an e-mail address so that I can give you some more background info.
Everyone I know that has used John Parker was pleased with the way the horses travelled and came off the lorry at the other end.
International transport seems fraught with delays - but if it's due to a sea crossing being postponed, or waiting for customs clearance, then the transporter can't really be held to blame. Sometimes people want a share and that can cause delays too - but obviously reduces the cost.

Hi Sandra,
Firstly, a BIG pat on the back! Secondly, I have a contact that does good ferry deals for Off-Road Motorsport. It's a long shot, but I'll get the phone number for Mark and see if they can do a deal, as they're kind of on first name terms now. Failing that, it might be an idea to approach P&O direct, to see if they'll give a discount in return for some publicity.

Auw, Diane - not that hard! Thanx but that pat is for everybody!! Good idea about the ferry deal but I think we're using a professional transport company now - thanx for thinking along anyway!!
My e-mail is sboddeus@gyc.es As I said, I do hope they are good because I do like them but I've used 2 others who can do it without such delays, or at least phoning you if they do have them - the permit is only valid a certain amount of days so it's not easy. And they are all share-transports but you´re right, sea-crossing often have delays. Thanks for the info!!

Well done indeed, Sandra! And what a relief that this initial step has gone so well, especially a relief for you, I should think, as moving a horse as traumatised as Merlin might have proved very difficult: he has absolutely no reason to trust humans at this stage. You are a star, Sandra!
It's amazing that the "DG Merlin Appeal" basically only started a week ago after Pauhla posted the details of the dreadful conditions he was living in. Would it be possible for an update on the state of the appeal, Lorraine? After all, the cost of getting Merlin out of his "slave quarters" is presumably just the start, and I am sure I am not alone in feeling that now this rescue is a reality I want to help make Merlin's future life a happy one! However, I have to say that the electronic transfer of funds etc still defeats me, so I am going for the good old fashioned "the cheque is in the post" method, which another one certainly will be tomorrow!

Sandra I was amazed on reading this thread because you're actually buying him today!! Well done! It only seems 2 mins that this whole process began. Hope everything goes well with Merlin's rehab location, it's so awful to think of a horse never having seen a field before. I don't live too far from Henley on Thames so would love to go and see him when the time is thought appropriate. I'm completely hopeless with horses (just ask my boy!) but very willing to give morale support or anything else I can.

Hi everyone,
Please could you check the ' cheques recieved' threads, which will have acknowledged all of your very kind cheques and letters.
Dawn, thanks so much for more money, you are a darling.
The update on the money is that the majority of the 'pledges' are in and the total in Merlins account is standing at £659.00............
there is a further £150.00 which is on its way that I know of, so altogether in less than one week, I am able to send Sandra the purchase money for Merlin, who thank God has left the Riding Establishment.
Sandra is now in a position to see how his health improves - however, we still need to cover the vet inspection / the dentist and farrier, which he is in desparate need, before thinking about the cost of transporting him home.
I cannot begin to tell you the 'buzz' that your messages / pledges and support gives me. All of this has only been made possible because of every one of you.
I will further update news of the 'account total ' towards the end of the week. Thanks so much
