this was an atricle in "horse" (www.horsemagazine.co.uk) ....
the ILPH is hoping that a new peice of research will help bring an end to the live export of horses for slaughter. The report concludes that if EU laws covering the welfare of horses transported for meat are enforced, the trade will become unprofitable.
From Jan 2007, new regulations were brought in governing the transport of such horses, including a requirement for single stalling in lorries and resting horses off the vehicle, with food and water, for 244 hours after every 24 hours travelled.
The report - focusing on horses travelling from spain to slaughter houses in italy - concluded that if these rules were enforced, journeys of more then 24 hours made a loss and those of shorter duration saw a reuction in profit.
The ILPH's head of campaignes says that there is "considerable evidence" that rules are flouted and they are lobbyingto ensure stricter enforcment.
"if journeys of over 24 hours are unprofitable, strict enforcmentwould effectivly put a stop to the totaly unnecersary and inhumane journeys to slaughters that horses have to endure." she adds "the report also concludes that it is more cost-effective to transport the carcasses of slaughtered equines in a refridgerated vehicle then it is to trasport live horses over long distances"
i know it's nothing we don't know already but i thought i'd put it here anyway.... It's worth knowing that magazines are following the story and are interested. There is also a good article in their about loaning horses from rescue charitys.....
