Sarah, is it the feed or the buckets they have a problem with? If so, have you tried the feed on the floor first to get them used to that and interested in it, then put it in a big, wide bucket afterwards? It might be the idea of putting their noses into a monster that bothers them.

Thanks liz,but it is the feed, they just dont have any interest in it,so far have tried grass nuts, beet, alfa, added mint, apples.Rose and tila did munch about a handful of grass nuts then left them for the grass. So I think it is a case of finding something that they want to try that smells and tastes better than grass.

Barging through gates, etc. added to the list!
I'm typing away madly - on page 5 at the moment! - on a document that is fairly general to start off with and then addresses specific situations but in a general way. I should have something ready to send by this evening. Can anyone who wants a copy PM me with their email address so that I can send it as an attachment.

anything you can add about stalions will probably come in handy too as i understand a lot of them are entire. i know that doesn't mean they will be a problem but anything you can add would probably be a great help ;D
You super star liz, i'm sure this will be greatly helpful !

Hmmmm. Stallions and colts. Not really that experienced there, I'm afraid! I don't want to sound in any way negative but I would probably suggest that someone should maybe only consider taking an entire if they know what they're doing and have the facilities for him. I would imagine many/most yards would have a problem offering livery. You'd also have to take into consideration factors such as nearby mares, roads and bridleways where other horses may pass, etc. Even though you may intend gelding, this isn't guaranteed to solve your problems. Late cut geldings can still be a handful.
I know it sounds awful saying don't take these boys on, especially if the alternative is the slaughterhouse. However, I do think you have to be realistic. Ending up with a horse you can't handle and have no where to home is not an impossible result and would not be good for either you or the horse. A life of misery for you is not worth it.
Sorry!

i didn't mean a "how to guide to stallions" i just meant along the lines of your reply some people may not realise what they are letting themselves in for.

11 pages of notes - yes 11! - are now available covering many of the basics. There are a couple of specific problems that people have mentioned and I'll try and find time to send PMs on them. Anyone else who wants the general notes, though, please PM me your email address and I'll send them on.
