I see Dizzy put a thread up on New Rider about Maybelline. A friend came over yesterday and thinks that Guinevere is not pregnant. I was wondering how long she was at the french farm for? And if anyone has any idea who I can contact to find out. Is it possible that she too has had a foal and it has been taken off her already? Anyway, will take photos of udder and stuff later and post to see what your thoughts are.

Do her papers show her having come from Spain? She could be in foal with an '08 foal? Scan or blood samples are the only sure way to check. Basically, those said to be in foal (and from the photos she does look it) are one that were running with a stallion. BUT, to be honest, horses from France or Spain, for the most part, would already have foaled by this time of year, late foals are quite rare here (May/June/July mostly) but not impossible.

I don't think I have put a thread on New Rider, I don't know anything about it! Could you post the link so I can have a look or did you mean saddle up?
I would also like to find out more about how long Maybelline was at the fat farm. Her papers imply she was registered very locally (Dept 41 also) in September 2005 though as it is in French I could be completely wrong! I am puzzled why she has milk especially now as Lucy says it is quite late for a foal. I hope if she had a foal taken off her it got a good life somewhere and not to the butcher. Maybe her old owner sold her after taking the foal away. Poor poor lass, no wonder she looks so sad.

If any of you want to scan the papers and email them to me I might be able to tell you more. It is quite late but not impossible. It really depends, if she was in the north of France or elsewhere (I read the possibility that Lady G comes from Germany?) a later foaling would make sense. Dizzy, could she be about to foal? or could it be a phantom pregnancy (I HAVE had it... it does happen, though I'm told it's rare) if she has had a foal on a regular basis and not this year?

Sorry Dizzy I meant Saddle-Up. Guinevere has milk too - clear milk - like Rice milk. Here are a few photos of her today:

She looks like she's had her foal taken off her - but she could be in foal for 08 I guess... Doesn't look heavily in foal now to me... but I could well be wrong.

I'd say maybe 08 too. BUT watch it, they do tend to catch us out sometimes. I worked for a stud during my year out and started a beautiful mare, once morning I went to tack her up and she had a foal in the box with her!

Hi
I have a mare heavily in foal and her teats are no way near as big as those on your horse. However, mine is a maiden mare and your mare could have foaled before, so that makes a difference. Either she is due to foal imminently, or she has had one very recently, it could have died or taken off her looking at the size of her teats. I would suggest getting the vet out because if she has foaled, she could be uncomfortable.
Do the bags under her teats look full?

You can buy something called PREGNAMARE which is a kit that tests if a mare is pregnant.
You prick the nose with a pin for a few drops of blood, put on a Q tip and in an hour if it goes blue, the mare is pregnant. I haven't used them, but I know friends who have and it's been effective.
It works from 40 - 120 days after the mare has been covered.
Not sure where you buy them from, sorry.
