Hi everyone, Im just wondering if anyone has saved a stallion (and had him gelded) how did he bahave around other horses? Im on a livery and one horse has been removed from our yard for 'being two friendly' with the mares and a 'little to un friendly' with the other geldings.
Thanks for reading

hello, my friend rescued an arab stallion that was going to be shot by the delightful people that owned him as they had no "use" for him and because they couldnt prove his breeding etc they couldnt sell him (there was more of a story to this but i have forgotton!). he was about 8 years old when she got him. she had him gelded and he is a dream. i guess every horse is different.

hiya Thanks for replying, i read somewhere that most wont be a prob as they have been with gelding and mare etc. just wanted to check. I also think this horse at my yard was a rig! although they maintain he wasnt.

I imported a spanish stallion 7 yrs ago and was told he was good around mares and geldings, which he was,but only when handled!I had him gelded after much thought and he still took quite some time before he could be turned out with a gelding and he still mounted mares 2 years later so I havent tried that one since!I would say that you would have to have a separate paddock available with decent fencing and be prepared to geld if necessary. As far as the stabling goes there should be no problem although if you actually had him next door to a mare you may find she comes straight into season and torments him silly! This is my personal experience, however you would def need to turn him out on his own however good he is.

Im not sure which stallion you are speaking of, but if he hasn't already covered mares, then that would be an advantage.
If he has been free to roam with his mares, he should (technically)be easy to handle than one locked up in a stable and only let out to cover.
