hi people,
can i just say what impressive progress everyone is making on here, it really lifts your heart and spirits to read all these successes, ;D well done everybody *gives everyone a huge round of applause*
i appear to have come accross a bit of a stumbling block and not sure if it is me, not giving the right signals or what i'm not sure,
we are doing a lot of the exercises in Kellys book, and i thought we were doing really well, now the problem i have is he doesn't want to go backwards, he will do anything to not do it, but he will do it if i long rein him, he does it really nicely, and now we can go back a fair way,
which makes me think it is me, not giving the right signals
any suggestions anyone??

Is this when you're trying to get him to rein back in hand? If so, the best thing that I found was to have my leadrope on the schooling ring of the dually, face my horse, have my left hand on the leadrope (assuming you're standing on the horse's left side). Apply slight backward pressure on the leadrope and use my right hand on his chest to give him an idea of what I want.
As soon as he shifts his weight I release the pressure and give him a chance to relax. It took a few goes but he got there in the end.
If its rein back on board, I'll let someone else answer because I'll probably just confuse you (I know how to do it but can't get it down in a clear concise way at the moment - brain fuzz)

hi Spruce,
no this is in hand, i do just as you say, and to begin with he really got it, but now, he won't walk backwards, except if i long rein him, this is where i have really got confused,
on the long reins i don't have to use hardly any pressure at all now,
but he started trying to bite me, puts his head up so i can't reach, puts his head over mine, moves round in circles with his back end, un yet he used to do a few steps at a time, but at least he did it,

Hi karen, my boy went for re-starting with Grant Bazin and this was a huge problem for us to overcome, Grant thought that it was a massive psychological step for William to take to go backwards. It was purely with perserverance, (as I hand my tutor next to me so I know my signals were ok, just as spruce has outlined above) but it was never going to be anything dramatic, just keep rewarding the 'try' and he will get the hang of it.
(in hindsight what William was actually telling us was that with his now diagnosed Shivers condition, it was too painful for him to do it, so don't automatically rule out a pain response as he woudl back up on long lines ok as well)
good luck though!

Oh Amarche, thats terrible, i do think in Tod's case that Grant might be right, he does have a lot ..... or did have a lot of psychological problems, we are slowly going through them though, it is just really strange that he did start to do them, and now won't, so i guess i just wanted to see that i was doing it right, and not confussing him further, thanks for your input karen and co

Dear Karen and co:
Can you please tell me what do you do when asking the horse to take a step back while you are on the ground leading the horse? Do you put your hand in the horse CHEST? (when the horse step back automatically the pressure released).
Best wishes.

hi ph, yes i am doing that, but since we got the Dr Cooks, he does now go backwards no trouble at all, so i think perhaps i didn't have the pressure right on the dually, my fault entirly but i'm now hoping that i can do the work in the Dr Cooks and then i won't need to put so much pressure as he will understand what i want him to do.......... does that make sence? ;D thank you karen and co
