The reason people seem to be more "scared" of jumping XC jumps is because they are solid and won't fall should the horse not pick up his legs high enough, which results in the horse tripping over the fence.. stick to the height you are comfortable with, and move up heights slowly...always get a good rhythm in your horse with enough impulsion that will get you both over the jump easily.... have never jumped tyre's so can't comment on that, but me dog loves jumping them...the first XC jump I ever did was the coffin jump....it was a great feeling but haven't done it since.... I was on a riding holiday at 15, and the notion just took me...why i picked that jump, I'll never know, but it was a great feeling, we then turned round, cantered down the hill (towards the rest of the class who were leaving) and popped over the railway sleepers and then the chicken coop....it's the only taste of XC I've ever had....they say it's good to end on a good note...never had the notion since..!!

No, the jumps won't fall over, but horses can still get over them even if they give them a good bash. Only jump what you feel comfortable with. If you're jumping 2'9" show-jumping, do a 2'3" - 2'6" XC until you feel mroe comfortable. Jump small tyres to begin with until you feel mroe comfortable. the problem with tyres, si that you can't make them an inch bigger, or 3 inches smaller, they are as they are. Which is a pain! There's usually a pole on top if the tyres, so focus on that... they tyres themself are just a filler Hope that helps

think of the tyres as your friend......they are definately softer and more bouncier if you hit them than a big hard log!!
