Am going a hack today on a horse I've only just started riding... I've had him out round the same "square" (we have two) a few times in walk and trot only. Yesterday I went round the other square with my niece on Seamus, who hasn't ridden for a few years, but managed to get ol' slowcoach going and keep up with the one I was riding..Long stride and forward going...Anyway we got on the feild and immediatly he kinda stiffend up, and my immediate thought was.."he's gonna go..." but then he relaxed, and was fine the rest of the way round.. we had a couple trots and even a short canter...he's very bouncy in trot, like ejector saddle.... lol!!! and his canter is also bouncy and he can get quite strong.. but stoppable... Today, I am taking a new livery round Dreghorn Ranges (hope against hope they are not shooting..MOD land) and I feel a bit nervous, but i think (providing we can get the gate open) that I will still go there..... and probably enjoy it...but also I fear if he's going to naff off with me, this is where he will do it...even though he doesn't generally take off... yes he's a bit spooky, and does the front legs wide apart kind of thing...goes from a 16.1hh to a 14.1hh and back up again... I know im not generally a nervous rider, and this is probably nothing on you guys, Kanga, Iceberg, Casper.... but ....I'm beginning to realise what it's like for you!!! And if that wee Border Terrier that Im looking after doesn't shut up, I'm going to strangle it!!! It's whining something rotten....must be the most annoying noise on the planet....... Wish me luck.....

Have a great time Julz. You sound like a cool cucumber under pressure - I would have been panicking when he stiffened up and felt like he was going to go, which of course would have made him much worse!
Am sending a Paddington Bear hard stare to the noisy Border Terrier for you!

You enjoy your ride and have a canter for me! I will be thinking (greenly) of you at 2pm Some nerves are good as we all know, its putting them into perspective which I seem to have lost. You havent done that so you will be fine. ;D tell us how you get on, and i will send annoying rat dog a hard stare aswell. xx

Hope you had a good ride.
Its completely understandable to be more aware of a horse your not used to, not nessiarily nerves. Its more because you dont know the horses reactions and behaviourisms then your confidence.

I think even the most ferociously brave have a moment. Wise way to stay alive. Sounds like you are getting to know each other. I have been heard to ask visitors do they have a gun to shoot my beoved JRT... fred the head.

then he trotted... LOL....then on the track back to the yard, he saw a Husky and decided it was worthy of a spook....!!!

Julz - you have perfectly demonstrated the "what ifs" to us on here. This is the biggest cause, in my personal opinion, of our worries - the "what ifs". When you have a new horse (or a well known one, but in new circumstances) you don't know how they will react, and that is certainly the biggest cause of some of my fears. And, the bugbear is that you don't know how they will react until the situation arises This is where Caspar's lovely expression "being the reliable leader" comes in, where we have to ignore the fact that we are worried and get on with it ;D Happy riding this weekend everyone ;D

Sooo...midear, if my statement is so true, dont beat yourself up over such a little thing like not knowing the horse. Bonds take time, as you know, and of course you need to get used to the horse. But if i were you, dont tell yourself you have confidence issues, because you dont =)

Yay Julz, glad you had a great ride - and a canter for Iceberg and myself. And one for good measure of course! Nile is lucky to have such a nice thoughtful rider on board. Well done you x

Im not beating myself up, but did used to have a fear of not being able to stop (whatever i may be riding) in big wide open spaces, like feilds....and dreghorn ranges are one mahoosive feild!
I've been going to that yard for 10 years, and it's only in the last year that I've been venturing over to the "dark side" - it's nickname.... but will be doing so again...good lord, I've never even taken Seamus over there myself, and he's mine!!!

I am glad you had a nice ride, and I enjoyed my canter So thankyou for that Riding 'strange' horses is very scary to me these days, mind you so is riding my own . Yet if I went to a school I think I would be ok, have to wait and see if Im right about that. ;D Are you venturing over to the 'dark side' today? Good riding if you do.xx
