there is no secret so close as that between a rider and his horse

that is really good advice, as i have come off before headfirst and hurt my nose as my hat slid back after hitting the ground. it is hard though, as you dont really think about that kind of thing as you are falling off, but next time i am coming off, i will try to remember:D xx

Bit of a Cossack horse trick, but seems somewhat sensible to swing down and push off. Don't like the idea of letting the horse go, but if needs must!

I would certainly prefer to take a chance of landing myself either on my feet or falling onto my bum than cascading out front or back door in a tangled heap with four departing shod feet whizzing past my ears. I'm going to practise that at walk and trot in the arena for fun some time.

thank you for the link Kanga - I;ve done a couple of those (unintentionally) at speed - a little more difficult to land on feet but my bum is big enough to cushion the blow - if you're able to process the info whilst in that awful panic moment of 'oh sh8t, going to hit the deck' then def kicking the stirrups free is probably well worth practising in my book

Frankly, the last time I went overboard, I went straight through the horse's ears onto an arena floor. It was all sand and full of fleas. I was hobbling around scratching myself like an Orangatang for hours. No time for elegant dismounts!

lol Kanga! I always find I replay a fall in slow-mo, like a really bad edit from a dodgy movie......

Please be careful trying to land on your feet, a friend of mine used to do this and ended up with spiral fractures in both legs
