hi wondered of anyone can advise me, when i last plaited pony i cut the ends of the plaits off! so now i have an uneven and very long mane, so to make matteres worse I have cut the mane, tried to do it at an angle not straigth, but all I have done is mess it up more! What can I do to easily rectify it and thin and straighten it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The original thought for cutting it was it was already cut and uneven but way too long and I thought too thick and long to pull as most of it would have had to come out, you can see why I never win at shows!

If it's too long, and too thick, then it's ideal to pull properly. it's when it gets too thin that you are in trouble. If you don't know how to pull a mane, do you do anyone who could help you and show you what to do?

I nearly got sacked once for pulling a mane so badly ! Done loads before without a problem and to this day don't know what I did any differently.... pulled the mane and was really please with the end result .... that was until he shook his head and I found that I'd scalped the poor lad bar for the hair at the very outer edge of the neck ! I did feel very guilty and bought lots of polos for the horse after that !!!

Geeup it sounds like it needs a good pulling session to thin it out (if the horse doesn't mind it being pulled). If it's long at the moment, pull conventionally - backcombing first to take the longer hairs out, but if it's short enough already, try to leave the longest hairs alone and pull the shortest ones.

why don't you just leave t to grow back? it will look sooo much nicer all lush and long, than pulled. pulling manes is horrible IMO

Hi, leaving it to grow long is not an option I'm afraid as its to rough at the ends, we also have to plait to show. Its my ownly unnatural concssion as shes as un rshod, un rugged and kept as naturally as we can. have cut it shorter so thats theres less to pul out and am dong it by pulling longest method. I am trying not to pull too much out which is why I cut it, but you can imagine the ends.

Use a solo comb as an emergency measure. It works extremely well on my horse, as his mane is thin so I never have to pull it, but I can see that if the mane is thick it would need pulling properly as the mane grows down again.
