Hi Cubic,
Just a quick one, any advice on what type of bridle I should use for In hand veteran?
Would I be ok in my ridden showing clothes or should I change Jodhs for Trousers? If so my ned is black/dark brown so I guess light trousers and brown jodh boots?
If anyone else can help = thanks too!

I don't show as frequently inhand as some others here, so I'm sure they'll chip in with more advice if they want to. But the type of bridle depends on the type of horse you have (hunter? riding horse? arab? etc), but it should be a ridden bridle, preferably with a bit with 2 reins, but a snaffle is fine if that's all you have.
It's better to change from your showing clothes into trousers, and yep, light ones are better if your horse is dark, and brown jod boots are ideal if you can run in them. Do you have a tweed jacket? They are better for inhand classes than blue or black.

A veteran should really wear a double bridle, or at least a pelham with two reins. You should wear trousers as this will enable you to wear shoes with decent treads that you can run in without slipping. You can wear a beagler ( old fashioned riding hat with no chinstraps, or a trilby or flat hat. In the event of Summer happening, you could wear a straw Panama type hat, which always looks the smartest. A tweed jacket, shirt and tie and beige/cream trousers. Also gloves but they are optional as you must be able to hold the leather reins when it rains---------as usual You should also carry a short leather covered showing cane .Good luck, let us know how you do

Ging - once addicted to showing, there is no escape mate.......... and it comes as 2nd nature remembering everything you need to do and have and make, wash etc etc. What colour goes with what, what bit of tack, what browband.........
Love it to bits, some people think showing is boring but i don't, it takes just as much effort to get that perfect individual show for the judge as it does to get a perfect round showjumping.
I've always been more of a ridden showing person but now with the two native piglets, i am veering towards some more in-hand as although i say so myself, they are 2 very good examples of their breeds *grins inanely*

Thanks all.
I kind of figured that as we weren't doing too bad in Ridden Veteran locally (4th place last time!). I wondered if my riding wasn't doing him justice enough then lets go for inhand showing, plus I may not be able to do the ridden classes if we do well this weekend. Please rain do not visit Bucks on Sunday!!!
I trying to get a flat snaffle bridle, so single pair of reins will do without martingale stops of course! and it wont have a flash. I have brown jodh boots already, just need a good polish. They are Mountain Horse ones so have good tread and are comfy to run in.
I have a brown cane (EBAY - I thank you!), I have brown gloves. I have a green tweed hacking jacket, plus shirt and tie. I think the only thing I dont have is the light trousers but I am sure I can get some from somewhere! I have this weekend and next Saturday to go searching.
I assume I plait the lad up for inhand? Still not got his tail pulled so if its not should I plait that also?
Have entered a local show this weekend, Ridden veterans and Riding Club horse, so want to qualify - its a Chiltern & Thames Rider Qualifier! So cos the entries for the one next week close tomorrow I will enter the ridden vets and RC on the day if we dont get placed high enough this weekend. Trying to be positive.

we need to know what type of breed he is to be able confirm plaiting or not, but I assume he's not an Arab or M&M so plaiting will be in order including his tail. Good luck

Unfortunately his tail really is quite pathetic and not big and bushy at all. WHen plaited at the top it looks lush but then as it gets thinner and thinner it looks daft! Well, we did some ridden showing this weekend. Oh not bad - 8th in veterans (basically he was too young!!!!). So much so that the Reserve Supreme for the Veteran Sociey and HOYS last year was placed 6th, cos he was only 16!! Controversial - I think so! Troy was excellent. Behaved wonderfully, unlike some who got put into 4th place?! But then its a showing class and not a manners class! I was told that cos he doesnt work round enough (something I am trying to work on that it makes him look older than he is, the horse in 4th place looked like it was going to explode and had its nose right up avoiding any contact). Perhaps should change the lad's bit? Riding Club horse clashed cos they moved the rings around and then waited 30mins for another competitor to finish another clash and then join the veterans!!!!! So I missed my other class. So I complained and got a refund. No jumping as they had tidied away the clear round!!!! Nice pic of us though! www.elainebarbourphotography.com/Open Show Widmer > Showing > Presentations > Widmer_1000.jpg Roll on this weekend and the inhand!
