tobyh I KNOW they lost money. There were 2 sets of working hunter jumps, loos and a large marquee hired and already in situ. Catering had already been paid for (judges/sponsors/officials etc). All entry fees were either refunded (in full I believe) or transfered to the hastily rearranged show at an alternative venue a week later. This show was cancelled at 0500 hrs on the morning of the show by the owners of the venue, NOT the BSPS area running it. Some competitiors had actually arrived at the venue!! This was not a show run by a company, but by a BSPS area committee (totally made up of volunteers who give their time so competitors have an opportunity to compete for various qualifiers - be it RIHS or BSPS champs etc). They did not have weather protection insurance cover as this is horrendously expensive.... I agree that some shows make huge profits, but these "area level" shows struggle to make ends meet, which is why - as you correctly point out - they "up" the fees for the qualifiers...doesn't seem to put people off!!!

I have just finished judging at an unaffiliated show at Ridgeway and was thinking about this thread. There were 10 classes, the entry fee was £6.00 per class and some ponies I saw in every class. They were paying £60 for a days fun. Maybe our entry fees for qualifiers aren't so bad, at least we usually on do one!
