Well round here its pretty much any horse between 13.2 and 15.2 that is suitable for all members of the family to ride. At one local show you can only enter if the horse is entered in 2 or more classes by 2 or more riders of the same family, but dont worry most local shows dont say that. Basically go in do a short show, walk trot cater on each rein, maybe pop a small jump or be required to get on and off etc, something fairly simple. Will be judged on suitabilty for different peple to ride, manners, temprement, etc. Should be turned out neatly, plaited if not a native and clean and rider smart in show clothes. Good luck to your friend x

sometimes the judge will ask two members of the family or friends to ride the pony/horse so in my case for my mare it will be myself and my daughter but to be honest in the 20 yrs i was showing with my previous horse, i was never once asked to let someone else ride him, i don't think they bother much at local shows, be aware that if they do ask you to jump, they may well hang a towel over the pole just to see if pony reacts to it or plods over regardless!

I am judging a Family pony in a couple of weeks - I have watched them before and thought that the smaller ponies would always be at a disadvantage - never thought of two jockeys though - I may ask my class to provide another member of the family to ride if possible.

I have been asked to do allsorts in this class! Including sliding off over bottom, and leaving unattended. Once we all had to swap and ride each others horses, and one judge brought her daughter to ride them-she must have trusted the horses! To be honest I don't think any of the above are a good idea! It is ages since I went in, I don't think they do stuff like that now. Just thought i'd scare you with tales from the 'olden days'! (about 10 years ago!)

I think i depends on the show, the judge etc. We have a local show down our way, just a little fun one. Now Aceofspades had a little NF mare that was 13.2 and we entered her into Family horse/pony. it was so funny to watch, her young daughter rode her first (about 5/6yo), then aceofspades got on for the individual (sp), she rode this little mare round with a carrier bag on each ear with carrots in, walk, trot and canter both reins all the time holding a umbrella in one hand open. The year before we covered her in blue tarpalin from head/toe to bum and rode round with a umbrella open and carrying a bucket. She won that both years, it was great to watch and watch other peoples faces at the sheer suprise of how this pony was so not bothere by any of.

I have always had great fun in this class and to me that is what showing is all about. I must admit Emma the horse in question was one in a million. We didnt even practise realy for theses shows either emma just took it all in her stride

My niece did this show with my friends 16.2hh IDx, a few yrs ago now, rules were one adult and child under 16, but it varies from show to show, my niece at the time was 11, built like a twig, and looked over-horsed! My friend rode the horse, did a plain show of WTC, then swopped riders and niece did the same show, WTC and a little jump, because she so small the horse pulled her out the saddle, but she stayed on, and they came 3rd.
