Ok, never shown in hand before. I want to take my rising 3 year old to one or two local shows and maybe do an in hand just for the experience. I,m aware that an inhand bridle would be best but i really do not want to lead him even with a coupling from the bit as he is teething. I have a very smart leather headcollar and i,m confident in my ability to 'control' him in it at a show so would that be ok. I don,t care if we got marked down just don,t want to embarrass myself. I know you can have them in a white web show halter or leather one but really i don,t want to spend the money on something i,m only going to use once or twice . What do you think (oh and by local i really mean local!!!!lol).

I dont think it will matter at local level to be honest. As youve said your not realy going for the competition its more to get your horse used to the enviroment,So even if you do get placed down for it,it wnt matter, just take him in what you feel comfterble with

Could you not have him in the inhand bridle but attatch the lead rein to the back of the noseband?

you can use a headcollar if you wanted too but I would say to use an inhand bridle with bit but attach your lead to the noseband. Though what breed is he? You can buy white webbing halters for about 7 pounds so if hes a native then thats a cheap and correct option...pluss when you dont want it anymore you can sell it on ebay

I've got a pony size webbing halter I bought by accident. I've literally tried it on my mare , then taken it straight off , as it was too small!
Yours for a fiver if you want!

Is he a gelding ? Please don't underestimate how excited he may get at the show where he will be in strange surroundings amongst strange horses (whether he is gelded or not). You will have more control in the white halter type of thing and as mentioned above this would be technically correct wear too.

hmm if you are being correct he would be in an inhand bridle with nylon inhand bit, coupling (two or three way) and lead...not a webbing halter or headcollar. To be honest just use whatever you are happy with as if you are just going for some experence

He is a gelding and i am well aware of how exciting it will be however i really do feel that i will have enough control. I have done a lot of work with him (he didn,t realise it was work though ). I do not have in hand showing experience but i do have plenty of experience with young horses (i am responsible for backing and starting off the youngsters at work) but i do appreciate your concern

lol jonswager, I'm a fussy old dear ! I took a quiet section C pony to his first in hand show last year and had to get my OH to lead him for a while, til he settled. (he does have his uses ;-) )
