A few weeks ago (in the summer) a pink 'pimple' developed on Mowgli's tummy. The vet advised to leave it alone. Now it has grown and the vet yesterday said it was a sarcoid. She wants to treat it with some cream that only a vet can apply, will make him grumpy as it will irritate him and give him 'bute to take away some of the irritation.
Has anyone successfully treated sarcoid s by this method or are there homeopathic routes I could try

guy I know used this treatment on his mare, and it really worked. The ointment he got contained fluoroacil (sp?), which is a component in various chemotherapy treatments. It is highly toxic, and has restrictions on use, which is probably why the vet has to be the one to administer it.
the mare treated only had one sarcoid, and has had no recurrence.

A friends horse had around 30 sarcoids and had been treated by 2 vets who couldn't get rid of them. With treated him with homoeopathy ( for the actual sarcoids and for the bacteria in his blood caused by tick bites which had lowered his immune system) after 4 months he only had 3 which went over the next few months. Have heard of other horses being trrated in this way with excellent outcomes so it might be worth having a chat with a holistic vet.

I expect i'm probably going to be slammed for saying this....but someone with a horse on my yard has a sarcoid on the insdie of the horses back leg. It had been getting slowly bigger bit with a relatively slim/small neck (the part attached to the horse). Well she banded it! At first very lightly, horse wasn't bothered, and then she tightened it, again, horse not bothered. Well within a few days it started to shrivel and it's now dropped off!! I have heard of this before, the same as covering it with vaseline. As it's viral it effectively needs air and a supply (the horse) to live. By smothering it with vaseline and banding it I guess it inhibited it's supply, therefore killing it!

Hi Janey, sad that you feel you will be slammed for voicing your opinion on here. I have heared that many vets do this. Its rather like skin tags that people get and having them tied off with cotton. Not heared of the vasaline trick though but I guess it helps.

Camrosa worked for my horse's sarcoid and cos it was also under his girth I could continue riding him. Your vet sounds like he is intending to use Liverpool cream which will mean around 6 weeks off work because of where the sarcoid is.

Have a look at www.geota.co.uk they use essential oils and are having very good results. There is a case study on there for one horse that was treated. I'm trying this at moment with my 4yr old gelding only been using oils an gel for 6wks so can't give definate answer but seems to be working. Also Hilton herbs suggest ditton cream and equemune herbs this worked for a friend her horse's sarcoids have never come back but it didn't work for my horse. Hope this helps

The GEOTA are who Pauhla has trainned with and using essential oils is how Gingers Nodular Sarcoid has been treated.

Bare in mind if you choose to treat chemically you are only getting rid of the sarcoid, not actually getting rid of the cause of why it got it in the first place.

Thanks for the advice everyone, Holly how did he get it? I'd love to know! There's so much debate on how they are caused. Like I said it started as a pink pimple.

The usually accepted cause is that sarcoids appear at the site of a trauma in susceptible horses – this could be as minor as a fly bite! Can’t really avoid this, but having a good immune system will definitely help.
My filly was treated with Liverpool cream and it worked excellently and did not hurt her although I have seen other horses react as though it is hurting. Her’s was in the girth area but she only had to be off work for 24 hours following the application to allow it to sink in, not for 6 weeks.
Other methods I might have followed have I known about them:
Global Herbs do a Sarcoid formula, is supposed to have had good results.
Camrosa is also supposed to work well on certain types.
Boosting the immune system using a herbal prep, making sure nutrition is up to scratch, etc.
